    I am merging from Outlook to Word. I have a First Name field and an Nickname field. In Word, I would like to say Dear Nickname (and if Nickname is blank use First Name). Anyone have an idea how to do this?

      Try this:
      Once you’re finally In Word (I’m using Word97) via the mail merge command in Outlook, Click Insert Word Field > If…Then…Else… and fill in the criteria supplied in my attached picture. It seems to work for me, with my standard Outlook Nickname and First_Name fields.

      To get the MERGEFIELDs into the separate boxes, press Ctrl-F9 to get the braces {}, and type in ‘MERGEFIELD xxxxx’, where xxxxx is the field you want inserted.

      Just to add one thing to Kevin’s advice. When you’re done doing this, press Alt+F9 to show field codes. It is useful to show the syntax for IF-THEN-ELSE fields so you can quickly type them. The syntax is:
      {IF ConditionExists “ThenDoThis” “ElseDoThis”}

      Cheers,
