I am running Win10/21H2.  In Reliability History beginning May 27, I began receiving “USBIE Stopped Working” or “USB Update Stopped Working”. The first message (USBIE) was the msg using the administrator account; the latter (USB Update) was using my regular user account. The “stopped working” messages occur 8 times, one time for each USB device (this is a 2 yr old Dell desktop). Today, the “stopped working” messages occurred 16 times; 8 times before I installed the May CU updates and again after installing the updates. The CU & net updates installed with no errors or problems as far as I can determine.

On May 27, I had not made any updates to Windows since late April (the April CU update). I have not made any Dell driver/bios updates in a few months. All usb ports work fine.

I looked for “usbupdate.exe” that was cited as the app that stopped working. I could find no file on the hard drive nor could I find any “app”/program similar to that name. A google search found only one topic that suggested it might be linked to Dell installed utility programs; I uninstalled Dell Support Assist a long time ago after getting error msgs with it. I do have Dell Update installed but the version has not been updated in a few months.

Any hints as to the problem? Thanks

Try updating Dell Update, it may be the cause for this error. Do you have any Dell system recovery software or other Dell installed?

I think I narrowed the problem to Dell Update program although I have the latest version and that version has been installed for several months. When I open Dell Update and do a check/scan, it throws off the update error messages for each usb on the pc. Until today, I had not opened Dell Update in a month.

I did uncheck run in background so that might help. If not, I will uninstall it.

        Thanks

Sorry for the very late response: Yes, if you are not experiencing any serious problems, you may not have to do anything except wait until Dell issues a fix for this crashing program.

Discussed at Dell community.  Seems wide spread.

I appreciate the Dell forum link. I will deal with it tomorrow. Strange that it happened on 5/27 as the other posters. I had not done any updates since end of April  – other than Defender updates.

        Thanks
