    Hello All,

I’m working on creating a USB thumb drive full of portable utilities to use in fixing Windows problems. I’ve already included:

      [*]CCleaner Portable
      [*]Revo Uninstaller
      [*]USB View

Now what are YOUR favorites. Remember these must be apps that DON’T require installation. Hopefully many loungers will find this thread useful.

      See Sysinternals.

Also, see WSCC which is a control panel you can use load and/or update the NirSoft and Sysinternals utilities.

See Unlocker both 32-bit & 64-bit portable versions.

As far as the NirSoft and Sysinternals utilities go I recommend you have them all. The Nirsoft utilities are about 16 MB on my 64-bit Windows 7 system. The Sysinternals utilities are about 32 MB. Not really bug enough to worry about.

As Joe stated, there are many Nirsoft Utilities that can be helpful. I did read and use a procedure quite some time ago that combined the Nirsoft Utilities with I believe the Sysinternals into one package that I actually have on a flash drive. This may be a similar site to the Sysinternals package Joe mentions, but from a diff location.

Some security programs that are now available in portable versions are:

      Spybot Search & Destroy:http://portableapps.com/news/2011-01-03_-_spybot_portable_1.6.2
run it from the Flash drive and get the latest updates, saved to the flash drive. Works GREAT!

      AVG : http://www.pendriveapps.com/avg-anti-virus-rescue-usb/
Keep AVG’s ‘VCleaner’ up to date by downloading new versions often.

      McAfee’s “Stinger” http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/how-to-use-stinger.aspx

Malwarebytes Portable: I don’t have it yet, (maybe later) but there’s a lot of talk about it here:
      http://www.filestube.com/m/malwarebytes+portable

I know there are more, but that’s what just came to mind.
I have and use all three, and use them on suspect customers PC’s when I’m out, on-site.

      Take a look!

      The Doctor 😎

PS: A neat thing about the portable “Spybot S&D” is that it can still download a list of bad web sites and pass that list off to the browsers, without being installed on the subject PC.
That’s the “Immunize” function. Which should always follow any update.

To All a big thanks for your suggestions. I’m slowly plowing through them. Here is where I’m at so far:

All NirSoft 32-bit Utilities loaded via WSCC {neat app}!
The NirSoft 64-bit Utilities – this is a single .zip file download from the NirSoft site.
        The entire Sysinternals Suite loaded via WSCC also {I did say it was neat!}
        Revo Uninstaller Portable
        SIW Portable
        SpyBot S&D Portable
        CCleaner Portable
        McAfee Removal Tool {MCPR.exe}
        Norton Removal Tool
        PageDefrag 32-Bit

Current usage on my 1Gb Flash Drive: 140Mb – Lots of room for more stuff.

        Keep those suggestions coming.

        Further updates to follow.

Along with several “Nirsoft” and “SysInternals” be sure to get a good “zip” app. (7zip portable), Picture viewer (irfanview), screenshot capture for documentation (lightscreen portable), pdf viewer (foxit reader portable), web browser, (Firefox portable), HEX Editor (Frhed Portable) and a second USBTD with the ability to boot to linux (LinuxLive USB Creator) is very handy in some cases. I use those in (parentheses).

This is wonderful information! When y’all are exhausted and can’t think of any more, I hope someone will put it in list form for us to work from!!

        Many thanks.

If you don’t have it, *I* recommend USBCD4WIN (http://www.ubcd4win.com/). I’ve added so many utilities to it that I have to use a mini DVD-R, but it also has a built-in utility to create a bootable USB drive to run the utils. I also have that handy on a 1G USB drive. USBCD4WIN is based on BART’s PE, so you will need access to the files to create the WIN-PE setup (instructions for creating the USB/CD/DVD are on the web page).

      Cheers,
      Phil

Autoruns is part of the Sysinternals package. It’s covers so much more than Startup Control Panel. SCP found 6 programs that run at startup. Autoruns found 16 programs and processes. With that said, I have and use both. But if you’re talking about saving space on the flash drive, I’d stick with Autoruns.

I have LiberKey on a USB key and it keeps itself up to date quite nicely — I used to use portableapps.com but I like Liberkey better because I like the way the self-updater works

Was there ever a completed list published??

    • #1292641

I used to have such a USB Flash drive with Useful Utilities on it, but to be honest the sheer effort of keeping it updated (even with a BATch file) made me give up the idea after a couple of years.

      BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

      “Geekster Et-Al”

Hello…Don’t know if this counts but, i guess you could put it on a “Flash Drive ” Wondershare LiveBoot ….It’s free only until Fri-12-2011 ..Has lots of useful tools… Regards Fred

    • #1292832

      Fred,

Yes it does count, however, it does require a Flash Drive of its own! I’ve downloaded this but haven’t had a chance to evaluate it yet. We’re out in the motorhome for the next three months. Just had all necessary repairs done at Tom Johnson Camping Center in Marion NC. We’re off Zip Lining today, FUTURE posts in doubt!
