I have a 128GB M.2 SSD in a USB3 adapter. It shows in Windows 11 (22000.51.210619-2323.CO_RELEASE) as a ‘USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device’.

I know it’s early days but Windows 11 will just not release it for ‘safe ejection’, no matter how long I wait after closing *all* File Explorer windows (not just the one where I had the M.2 drive open):

    11-usb_release_problem

So we are clear, there are *no* programs or windows that are using the device.

I right-clicked on the taskbar to choose ‘Task Manager’ like in Windows 10… but all options have gone except for ‘Taskbar settings’:

    11-rght_click_on_taskbar

I don’t understand the logic that this is somehow an ‘improvement’.

      Interesting…

I tried again and despite closing all programs and windows that has previously been using the external 128GB M.2 SSD in its USB 3 enclosure, I just couldn’t get it to eject safely.

I even tried restarting Explorer – twice! – from within Task Manager. I ended up having to restart Windows 11 to release whatever was locking it.

No problems whatsoever ejecting a 128GB USB3 flash drive after having used it. The notification that the safe ejection had been successful was immediate.

That sounds rather similar to the behavior I would get in previous versions of Windows for a hot swap SATA bay in my tower. I resorted to using a third party app instead of the Windows option.

Note: The web site is HTTP only (no HTTPS) – HotSwap!

Given that you are satisfied there is no user generated call upon the USB contents; could it be the OS is still indexing the drive in background? For a smoother user experience, of course.

That’s very likely and a good suggestion. Thank you.

The next time it happens I’ll watch what’s happening in the background with Sysinternals/TechNet’s Process Monitor.

Up until now I’ve just been wizzing round Windows 11 getting first impressions rather than looking under the bonnet.

I haven’t seen this utility before but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.
