Windows 7 sometimes has trouble recognizing USB devices at start-up. Specifically, it often fails to recognize my KVM switch, a real annoyance. If i leave a camera flash card in the card reader, the computer will not boot up. If I switch my KVM from machine 1 to machine 2 for a while, the machine 1 monitor connection is lost, but not the mouse/keyboard. Windows 7 was an improvement over XP, so I hope Windows 10 fixes some of the minor Windows 7 bugs.

I have problems with booting w/ a non boot USB drive installed too, I have always thought it was the BIOS getting confused.

KVMs them selves tend to be flakey, if I were to buy one today I would want a hard switch on the unit to switch between computers, having said that I have seen many expensive units with that feature fail.

There are some bios setting that MAY help. xHCI and EHCI settings affect how USB ports are treated. I have no direct knowledge of this just happens I was looking into options for these recently …

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.
