I am still trying to get my old computer to network properly.

I am trying to get it see my Canon S520 printer which is connected to my XP computer. What is the format for printer network addresses?

Also as the printer is USB what port should I select – Win 3.11 only gives me COM or LPT port options. (If all else fails brickwall I guess I could plug the serial printer cable into my printer as well and set it up as another printer)

I can’t get 3.11 to see my XP shared folders anyway so that could be part of the problem (see my other post).

WFW does not support USB and therefore will not be able to see the USB printer.

If the printer is connected to the XP computer, would it not be visable as a shared printer?

The path would need to be mapped such as :

        net use lpt1: XPboxprinter

        Just my CDN 2cents worth.

Thanks for your suggestion Chris, I’ll try it. At the moment, I can’t even get the computer to see //XPbox/shared folder. sad

(BTW what does CDN stand for)

CDN – Canadian grin It’s one of a few accepted abbriviations for Canada, or in this case, Canadian.

Just on the off chance, do you have the same network protocols running on each computer? I’m thinking of NetBEUI, TCP/IP, etc…

              Thanks for that Chris

I re-installed DOS network client and yes, it didn’t have NetBEUI or TCP/IP installed – just NWlink. So I intalled NetBEUI and now the 3.1 machine can see the XP box’s shared folders. Yippee!

I installed a generic 3.1 driver and my printer ‘wakes up’ when I print something but it doesn’t print anything. Any clues?

      Good morning Melissa…

I’m glad to hear you’ve got the communication happening between the computers.

As for your printing problem now, a quick check of the Canon Canada, and Canon USA websites, I couldn’t find any reference to using any OS before Win95.

I think you maybe out of luck, but hopefully I’m wrong about that grin.

You could possibly try using a driver for an older Canon printer… but again, that’s not a sure thing either.

      I hope this helps…

Long time after the thread started, but if you really want to print Win3.11 files via the XP box, what I’ve always done in the past (admission !) is to transfer the file to the XP box and print from there – much easier than messing about !
