My HP 880C printer can use USB or the regular printer connection. Is onetype of connection faster than the other?

In my experience, USB is MUCH faster. By all means, use it.

Yes, USB is faster, but it is unlikely to make a perceivable difference to the print speed unless the buffer in the printer is big enough to take the whole page when it is spooled.

…faster, yes, but there are other advantages. Being USB, your printer is now hot-swappable – you can unplug it (should you want to) without powering down your PC. You can also use it with a hub. If you have a scanner, you will not get that awful old problem of the two devices fighting for the parallel port.
