    Are there any “generic’ drivers for USB drives for ME or W98 to avoid having to search for drivers for each one? Or is there a compendium of such drivers?

        Many thanks for that. Your response prompted me to do what I should have done first: Google for solutions. After some searching, I found one.

        At this web site Dynamic Web Solutions; USB Drive FAQs, under “III. Installation inquiries” I found reference to a “USB Drive driver file for Windows 98SE”, to be downloaded as this zipfile. I downloaded and installed this to my laptop with Windows ME, and lo-and-behold, it seems to work! One has to go through a full hardware install for each new USB drive, but at least one doesn’t have to look elsewhere for drivers.
