I purchased a mini wireless adapter to boost my wi-fi signal. Unfortunately I don’t seem to have a USB 3 port. My device manager a USB Root Rub (USB 3) and it also shows an Intel USB 3 eXtendible Host Controller-1.0 (Microsoft). I have no idea what either of those devices are for despite reading several articles about each device and not understanding anything about either.

I know that a USB 3 port can be installed on my computer by a shop but if either of the two devices that I referenced above would allow me to purchase an external device or adapter my life would be much easier.

I checked several sites for information but everything I read was incomprehensible to me as were the devices and adapters offered on Amazon and New Egg. I’m open to any suggestions that you may have for me.

My computer is a Lenovo ThinkCentre running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.3803

Did you read any of the five replies to your last topic about USB 3 three days ago? (as you haven’t acknowledged any of them)

Is there an external device that will covert a USB 2 port to a USB 3 port?

I purchased a mini wireless adapter to boost my wi-fi signal. Unfortunately I don’t seem to have a USB 3 port.

This has already been answered in your previous thread.  These are USB ports:

      USB-Ports

Note that the USB 1.0/1.1, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.0/3.1 ALL use the USB-A port.  Any USB-A connector, regardless of protocol, will plug into a USB-A port.

There is a USB-C port shown in that image, on the right.  A USB-A connector will not plug into a USB-C port.  Your lack of response to the previous thread’s responses to your question that you pose again in this post seems to indicate that you have a mini wireless adapter with a USB-C port and/or connector.

In your previous thread are posts that illustrate the various ways in which a USB-C connector can be used with the appropriate adapter to make the connection to your mini wireless adapter.

Perhaps you have a different question?  Please post the brand and model of your mini wireless adapter so that we can see what it is that you might be trying to ask here.

      >>edit<<< I use a USB-A/USB-C cable between my Android phone and my PC and all functions are supported; passing files both directions, charging my phone, etc.

      USB-A-to-USB-C

@CAS, if your Device Manager is displaying ‘Intel USB3 eXtensible Host Controller-1.0 (Microsoft)’ that means your device has USB3 capability and likely has a USB3-A port or more present.

You need to physically look and check your device USB ports Back/ Front/ Sides for Blue USB tabbed socket/s (as per bbearren’s pic) to use with the USB3 wireless adapter before it’ll work as intended.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

I  finally found  two (blue) USB 3 ports  after pulling out everything that was plugged into the many ports in the rear of my computer. I plugged the mini-wireless USB adapter that I recently purchased and it’s working properly to boost my wi-fi signal.

Thanks to all of you your patience and your guidance. I would be lost without your help.

Download and run the free portable USB Device Tree Viewer

The app will display the type of USB ports (USB-A, USB-C..) in your PC.
