Today I am on fire fighting duties and this little beauty has landed on my desk:
Hopefully with the vast wealth of knowledge in the lounge someone will have seen this before. (fingers, toes and other appendages crossed):-
Word document comes up with “File may be corrupt” dialog.
(I attach sample copy of one page containing only two lines of text).
I follow the instructions and copy all to new file.
    Still corrupt.
Pages 1 through 6 are copied as a sample to new document.
    Still corrupt.
All but two lines are deleted from document.
    Still corrupt
The end result is that it is impossible to apply style numbering to the required lines. Note also (in attached doc) that selecting numbered bullets AND symbol bullets is possible at the same time.
From lounge archives I have followed advice to “drill down” the styles to apply the numbering but to no avail. When applying numbering to the Style as per FormatStyleModifyNumbering the resultant text in the style dialog indicates “no numbering” instead of “outline numbering”

    TIA

Very strange. I don’t know what causes this problem, or how to repair it. You can probably recover the text in the document as follows:

      Ctrl+A to select everything
      Ctrl+C to copy to clipboard
Ctrl+N to create blank new document
Edit/Paste Special…, option Unformatted Text to paste the text without formatting into the new document.

All formatting will have to be redone, but it probably beats typing in the whole document again.

        Thanks Hans.
I’ve just tried the save_as to a couple of doc types and found probably the best results from save_as html.
The tables come back strange and I can then save as word document again but now it has no corruption.
I genuinely believe the corruption stems from an errant section break held in a table cell or some such like. (notice how the original attached file, whilst only two lines, was 300+kb!?!?)
Still, following your advice at least I now have an uncorrupted virgin text doc from which tocontinue.
Thanks again and if anyone does have a solution, please post.

      Well Alan from Wits End

The problem you have is the metadata lists have built up to high levels – did you know that the file is storing 2039 list definitions?

If you do a search back through this forum you will find a regular mention of this problem with fixes. You might like to start with 5766 before moving on to 140433.

        Holy smoke!!!
Nice one Andrew, I read all of the associated links and MS Q’s and I must say this is a gotcha of the highest order.
The links are recommended reading for all loungers with Word.
Problem not yet solved but a few long hours should see it off.
