I went to turn on my Dell 15 5510 Windows 11 Pro 22H2 laptop this morning and I encountered a white screen. I attempted this a couple of times and had the same result. It would go to the lock screen and sit there until the time had changed. The question of whether I like the picture in the background (I don’t know how else to describe it.) never materialized. So I thought I had a bad Hard Drive and I went to connect my external Hard Drive with the boot USB. For some reason, the boot USB failed to recognize. So, I gave up on that idea and decided to try my recovery USB. I didn’t want to erase anything, so I simply chose to exit and log into Windows 11. Which it did. I then did my weekly backups and then used HD Cleaner to clean up the drive. It found a few registry entries that needed fixing. So, I did that and cleaned up the Hard Drive. I restarted it after that and Windows 11 came up like it always had. I am just curious as to why it did that.

It seems to have rectified itself upon starting up today. However I will accept any suggestions.

Were there any updates and did the HD Cleaner show you the registry keys which may look bizarre (more than they might usually look)?

I am just curious as to why it did that.

Hard to say anything with certainty, only many possibilities and time…

        1. The laptop hardware is flaking out for any reason? See if the USB connectors are clean enough and try a different cable if possible.
        2. Some software bugs could be so rare that meet specific conditions you may get them once, eh hopefully this case is it that.

It found a few registry entries that needed fixing.

I have yet to see a registry entry that actually needed fixing to make Windows run properly.
Registry cleaners have to appear to do something otherwise you would conclude they are snake oil – and you would be right.

Windows restart is often the best way to “fix” Windows because it allows the changes to take effect. This is something you should always do about an hour after all the patches have “successfully” installed.

        Paul,

Are you suggesting that I do a second restart of my Win 11 laptop? In both my laptop and Desktop I do restarts immediately after the updates are complete. I was unaware that a second restart was needed, or is the one that I do well enough?

As to the cable(s) that were in question. I have but the one hub for connecting my external HD and boot USB with. Is it possible I have a bad hub? I never fully tested it when I got it. In hindsight, I should have.

Yes, a second restart after the updates are installed.

I would not use a hub to boot from USB because not all hubs are up to scratch. Always plug directly into the PC.

      cheers, Paul

Oh, okay. I will remember that next time I update either machine.

Oh, the main reason I use a hub is that I have gotten to dependent on my mouse and don’t know how to function without it. Can I use a 2 way splitter for the USB plug on my laptop instead of using the hub???

A hub is the same as a splitter in USB terms. It is a Serial connection so you always need some electronics between each device.

      cheers, Paul
