When I try to upload jpg files to various free online photo galleries from my home computer, it always hangs up and eventually times out. In desperation, I tried one of the sites from my office computer, and had no problems at all. It’s as if the web sites were asking the browser on the home computer for some information that it was unable to send (but that’s just a guess).

Both computers run Win98 SE using IE5.5, and (I think) both are upgraded to the latest service releases. Both are connected through LANs and firewalls. The home computer is on DSL while the office computer is on T1.

As far as I knew, both were configured similarly, but that’s clearly not the case. Where should I start looking for differences in configuration?

Try it with out the firewall, to see if this is blocking it.

        Tried that… no joy.

        Tried:
        – using Netscape navigator
        – upgrading from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0
        – removing CISCO VPN client from Windows startup

        Same result after all changes.

My ISP provides personal web space. The user interface has two options for managing the online content — one is called Web Wizard and the other is called File Manager. Clicking on the links to either of these tools results in the browser going into never-never land. Tried explictly enabling all cookies from the ISP site. Same result.

I found out from my son that he is unable to upload files to his online web site (I’m not sure of the URL).

When using Netscape Navigator, the little wig-wag at the bottom of the screen goes back-and-forth continually, with a message “trying to contact host pbase.com”.

Get the same results with a second computer on my home LAN.

There sure seems to be something systematic on my computer and/or LAN that is blocking a whole bunch of online activity via the web browser, but I’ll be darned if I can figure out what it is or where to look. Frustration level is growing by the minute… Arghhhhhhhh.

Next step — I am going to try a portable computer on my office LAN and then bring it home to try here.
