Uploading a Powerpoint presentation (Office 2K)

Please help. I’m trying to upload and link and powerpoint presentation to my homepage. I have created a hyperlink, but the hyperlink say URL Error. The file has been renamed or???? Any ideas???

Can you give some details of what address you are using? This might help other loungers.
Have you saved the presentation as a slide show (filename.pps) – instead of as a presentation (filename.ppt)?

presentation was saved as an htm file. I thought that would be necessary to upload and play. It’s a 16 slide show presentation with music that I want to play when you click on the hyperlink. is the link correctly embedded in my index homepage. Would I want to save and upload as a .ppt or .pps instead?

When you save as HTML in PowerPoint, a huge nest of files is created, all of which are needed to make the thing work. If you expect that your visitors will have PowerPoint, making a PPT or PPS file available is much more convenient for you, and possibly for them.

So if my audience, if you will, doesn’t have Powepoint installed on their computer, they won’t be able to “play” my presentation???? Can I burn a copy on CD ang give to someone who has Powerpoint and will they be able to view it??

I think you can solve this by using Pack and Go (File | Pack and Go . . . and then following the wizard) or the recipients can get PowerPoint viewer from the Microsoft site. (There have already been a number of postings involving people sending presentations to others who do not have PPT installed, for example here and here which contain references to the latest PPT viewer and limitations.)

For good info on creating an autorun CD from your PPT files, see the autorun CD pages of my site (URL in signature) for the “do it yourself” approach. I also list a ton of third-party products that you might want to consider (PPT to Flash, etc.).

I highly recommend Sonia Coleman’s Autorun CD Project Creator to help automate creating an autorun CD, especially if you have linked files. It’s inexpensive shareware and Sonia gives great customer/tech support. A link to it is also on my site listed under third-party products.

As Jefferson said, when you save as htm, a large number of files are created, all of which you’ll have to transfer to the webserver. But then anyone with a web browser should be able to see the presentation.
Drawback: Older browsers may still have difficulty with the presentation, since it uses frames.

Another solution is the use of the PPT viewer (for users without ppt). The user will have to be capable of downloading and installing the viewer.

I can’t tell if the hyperlink is correctly embedded in your homepage, because you still haven’t given us the URL to your homepage! What files did PPT’s HTML create for you to work with, and what link did you insert (and how?) into the code of your index page?

If you get really stuck, you might consider using RnR’s PPT to HTML tool.
