    Hey Y’all,

Yesterday I once again attempted to upgrade my wife’s Dell 14500 (2020) laptop from W10 Pro to W11 Pro. So far an exercise in futility.

    Here’s what I did:

    1. Down load a fresh 24H2 ISO.
    2. Since last time it failed due to driver incompatibility I tackled that first. This machine refused to enable Core Isolation for the same reason.
    3. I removed the offending drivers BrUsbSib.sys (oem39.inf) and wdcsam64_prewin8.sys (oem16.inf). I used pnputil command to accomplish this.
      Ex: pnputil /delete-driver oem16.inf /uninstall /force
    4. Turned on Core Isolation successfully.
    5. Reboot and Core Isolation still set and everything working as it should.
    6. Ah home free I thought… Brought up WU and sure enough 24H2 was offered and off I went.
    7. About an hour later the system was back to the home screen, however, Winver showed I was still on W10 22H2!
    8. Next I tried an Over-the-Top install using the ISO I had downloaded, same results as before.
    9. In both cases I got error: 0x8007001f. Not a lot of help since most of the googled cures I had already tried.

Have you tried Windows Update troubleshooter, have you checked audio driver or clean boot ?

      Outside the Box Suggestions Welcome!

I have tried upgrading from Win10 to Win11 on four machines, and only one went through successfully, an (unsupported) HP Omen Laptop, from Win10 22H2 to Win11 24H2.

The other three (1 supported and 2 unsupported, all home built) failed when trying to upgrade from Win10 22H2 to Win11 23H2. I had to clean install all of these three with Win11 23H2. The upgrade from Win11 23H2 to 24H2 went through fine.

From what I’ve seen in your posts, you probably have a backup image. At least for testing purposes, you could try clean installing 24H2. If it works, at least you know it. And at that point you could keep it, or restore the backup. (Clean installing is MUCH faster than updating. It takes forever for Windows to create its internal installation backup.)

Suggest you try upgrading from Windows 10 22H2 to Windows 11 23H2 and, if that works, then upgrading from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2.

BTW, I “assume” you verified her CPU actually supports the POPCNT and SSE4.2 instructions required for Windows 11 24H2?

      Hey Y’all,

      Thanks for the Ideas!

Yes I’ve tried the trouble shooter and safe boot.

I haven’t tried the audio driver since it enabled Core Isolation all the drivers should be good, but I’ll keep that in mind.

Yes, I have multiple images, however I’m loathe to clean install as the machines have a lot of tweaks for the way she works. It may be necessary though! Next time I can get her off it for a couple of hours I’ll try the clean boot and see if it works.

      Keep those ideas coming!

Get a new hard drive, install clean.

Buy her an ipad for Christmas.  (you did say out of the box suggestions)

      Hey Y’all,

This computer is just obdurate! (your word for the day)

      Here’s the latest machinations:

      • Visited Dell Support and downloaded 7 files including Audio Driver and BIOS.
      • Installed all, checked system operation and all ok.
      • Ran the Windows Update Assistant…Failed!
      • Checked Storage (SkHinx 512 Gb SSD) had plenty of space but decided to remove 2 Dell partitions and increase the size of C:.
      • Ran DCIM commands to insure recovery partition was healthy
      • Rebooted and checked system operation.
      • Cleared Windows Update Cache and then Forced Trim on C:.
      • Ran Windows PC Health Check and all OK!
      • Ran Windows update and it offered Win 11 23H2! Ran and Failed.

Well, It looks like the only thing I have left to try is the nuclear option.

      Hey y’all

I made another run at this today, figured by now MS should have their act in gear.
      NOT SO!

      1. Removed Registry Block
      2. GRC InControl – Released Control
      3. Core Isolation still ON
      4. Open Shell – Uninstalled
      5. Ran Dell Update & checked the Website. Updated BIOS and a ton of drivers.
      6. Shut machine down and removed all external devices used laptop kbd & TP for the rest of the process.
      7. Started it up and initiated offered Win 11 Upgrade
      8. After an hour and 10 minutes machine was back to Win 10! x08007001f.

I really don’t want to do the clean install but it’s looking more and more like I’ll have to. Since I still have 5 months I’ll probably try it a few more times. A full install will have a lot of pain, remember it’s my Wife’s machine!

      RG,

It doesn’t appear that you have tried the three steps below, which I am sure you’re familiar with. I have had updates fail on occasion that I was able to install successfully after running them.

      1. chkdsk [drive] /f
      2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
      3. sfc /scannow

If SFC finds and corrects errors, I usually restart the computer and run it again, to be sure all is fixed.

They may not help, but they’re easy enough to run, and if it saves you from having to do a clean install…
