Upgrades end in erratic, partial hangs

    By Fred Langa

A reader’s heavily upgraded XP system randomly freezes for several seconds from time to time.

Strangely, during these mini-hangs, other parts of the system remain unaffected.

Hang-ups resulting from Comodo and MSE can be eliminated (?) by editing each program’s exclusions to ignore the other’s program. Otherwise they seem to get in a royal battle over who’s going to do the protecting, each grabbing control from the other.

Fred, Re:Resetting a cranky Win7 homegroup network he should also insure he has Home Network selected, not Work Network. Work Network will not allow HomeGroup settings.

Fred’s initial article suggested using Process Manager to see what process is tying up his PC. I have a similar problem but it ties up the PC so thoroughly the Process Manager does not open until after the problem goes away! My problem is actually a busy hard drive rather than a busy CPU and I haven’t been able to find what is keeping the hard drive so busy. At some random point the hard drive light will come on solid and stay that way for as much as 20 minutes or more and I can’t get anything like Ctrl-Alt-Del to respond until the hangup is over!

Is there any way to give the Process Manager a higher priority than everything else? I have a utility that is supposed to tell me what the drive is doing but it also stays hung until the busy time is finished. Can I give it a higher priority?

      I’m running Vista Home Premium.

      Thanks, Bill
