Purchased a new 1TB OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD for mid 2015 Mac Book Pro. Cloned existing OS Catalina (512 Gb) to new drive, and installed in MacBook. Tried to upgrade to Monterey OS and received this error message, “A required firmware could not be installed. Compatible internal storage is required in order to update.”

Turns out the EFI firmware needed to be upgraded before Mac Book would recognize the new drive for the OS upgrade. Had to re install the original mac ssd, upgrade it to Monterey, as Monterey updates the EFI firmware. Then installed the new OWC 1 Tb ssd and had to upgrade the OS to Monterey a second time on the new drive. Time spent about 5 hours.

A lot of extra steps. Hoping this post helps someone else avoid the above pitfall.

Good luck with your ssd upgrade.

You could have tried OCLP it has all the tools in it for unsupported Mac’s but also useful tools for supported Macs in general as well, installing OS Monterey on an unsupported 2014 MacBookPro11,2 was a breeze in under an hour, just; Did a complete “bare metal” on the above machine. While rummaging around in the “post install” OCLP there’s NVMe  support as well as other useful settings. As it turns out  this machine needed virtually no additional settings and runs like a champ here.

I have a 512GB NVMe arriving tomorrow, as alas I still have a need for Windoze 10 in Bootcamp so i’ll post further if I hit any problems, disk wise, and also the dreaded Battery swop far from an easy task in a Macbook alas.  🙁

Just wondering if this year’s going to be the end of support for Intel based Macs, the “rumour mill” is rife out there with speculation.
