Thanks for that – most interesting. However my question is: we are running W7RC1 and await our October disks. Anyone know if we can upgrade to the October version or will it be a re-install from scratch please?

Officially Microsoft does NOT support that path. However, see some of the links at upgrade win7 rc to win7 rtm – Bing for ways to accomplish it.

Here is a scenario that may be of interest to those of us who have legitimate access to Windows 7 Ultimate, which they will have to wrest from my clenched fist with, um, what did you say your name was Miss?

For my ho-hum computer, a clean install is fine. But what of my all-the-bells-and-whistles HP Pavilion Entertainment PC that has so many gadgets and doodads built into it, all OEM, that I have no idea yet as to what they are or what they do? All I know is that it’s 64-bit Vista and it runs 64-bit Photoshop.

If I want my Windows 7 Ultimate on the computer it will have to be a clean install (and I acknowledge that I am voiding the warranty in doing that), but I am also ceding all control over the nifty extras that I paid for in buying the thing. Maybe HP will have a patch kit for the likes of me. Then again, maybe they won’t.

One possibility I have considered is driver update utilities. I let one scan the computer recently and it might have been freeware SIW or freeware Belarc in the accuracy of its analysis, or even better, but I have to admit that it had it pegged, and at thirty bucks a computer (and I confess I have more than one that I would like to keep the OEM stuff on), it might be worth it to get a subscription in the hope that it will update all of the gadgets for me as the drivers become available. If it’s a clean install I don’t see how I can get HP to do it.

A second possibility is to have a dual boot arrangement, with Vista 64 OEM for legacy applications and Windows 7 Ultimate for everyday use.

A third possibility is a Virtual PC, but I dislike that because it costs precious resources.
