Since updating to 21H1 I have no sound whatsoever on my pc, which is Win 10 Pro 64 bit. My sound card is ASUS GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0. On microsotted.com Community questions, there are 11 pages of distraught users with the same exact problem. Is there any fix? Or do I have to do a clean install of Windows?

If you stick in headphones into the sound jack do you hear sound?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 19, 2021 at 7:22 am #2378655Actually, GeForce cards also function as sound cards (my own GTX 1060 shows 4 separate HD audio outputs in the sound control panel) but there’s a “catch” to using it to play audio.
There are no separate audio ports on the cards, the audio is “included” in the video stream, just like TVs, Blu-ray/DVD players and other video streaming devices, so in order to actually “hear” the audio, the monitor that’s plugged into the card’s output port (HDMI, DisplayPort or DVI) must support digital audio playback.
My own Dell monitor does support digital audio playback but has no built-in speakers, you have to use the audio “line-out” jack on the rear of the monitor. Due to extremely low volume levels when using the monitor’s line-out jack, I use my motherboard’s built-in audio ports instead.
Over the past 6 months or so, I’ve lost my audio after each Windows update because the update always resets my default audio output to the Dell monitor plugged into my GTX card instead of the speakers plugged into my motherboard.
Opening the sound control panel and setting my default audio back to my speakers and disabling the Dell audio always fixes this until the next update.
