Where do I find Windows XP updates that have been downloaded and are ready to install. I get an initial notification in the system tray with a balloon. But shortly that disappears only to appear again at some random time, which is usually inconvenient.

I presume you are talking about the automatic updates? The files that are downloaded are stored in your browser’s cache, and are not kept somewhere for you to find and install. I believe the intent of this feature was to keep Windows up to date without user intervention, eliminating one of the bigger issues the Dark Side faces – outdated software.

You can download updates in ready to install patch format from http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com[/url%5D. Personally, I would rather go to Windows Update and download fixes so that I know what is going on at all times. That way when Windows decides to go belly up – and it will – I can go back to the latest change that was made.

Yes, I am referring to Automatic updates. I have my system set to “Automatically download updates and notify me when they ready to be installed”. (I can always elect not to install an update) I was just notified that an update was downloaded and was ready to be installed.) I wasn’t ready to install it, so I just closed the window. Now that I have some time, I would like to see what the update was and possibly install it, but the notification icon on the system tray has disappeared. If the downloaded files are in the browser’s cache, how do I find them and possibly install them?
