The latest : Driver Verifier GUI, verifiergui.exe, is deprecated and will be removed in a future version of Windows. You can use the Verifier Command Line (verifier.exe) instead of the Driver Verifier GUI.

All versions of NTLM, including LANMAN, NTLMv1, and NTLMv2, are no longer under active feature development and are deprecated. Use of NTLM will continue to work in the next release of Windows Server and the next annual release of Windows. Calls to NTLM should be replaced by calls to Negotiate, which will try to authenticate with Kerberos and only fall back to NTLM when necessary.

Overview of the DirectAccess to Always On VPN migration

Applies to: Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows 10

In previous versions of the Windows VPN architecture, platform limitations made it difficult to provide the critical functionality needed to replace DirectAccess, such as automatic connections initiated before users sign in. Always On VPN, however, has mitigated most of those limitations or expanded the VPN functionality beyond the capabilities of DirectAccess. Always On VPN addresses the previous gaps between Windows VPNs and DirectAccess…

DirectAccess is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend migrating from DirectAccess to Always On VPN…

      Deprecation of WSUS driver synchronization

…Out of the participants who use WSUS, only 34% reported that they use it to synchronize drivers. Most of this 34% reported that they are in the process of implementing a different solution and don’t anticipate any problems with deprecation. Only 8% of participants indicated concerns over potential effects from deprecation, and we want to help everyone to get ready…

Our plan is to deprecate WSUS driver synchronization on April 18, 2025. For on-premises contexts, drivers will be available on the Microsoft Update catalog, but you will not be able to import them into WSUS. You’ll need to use other means, such as Device Driver Packages, to distribute the drivers within your network…

      Microsoft to kill Control Panel

..The Control Panel is a feature that’s been part of Windows for a long time. It provides a centralized location to view and manipulate system settings and controls. Through a series of applets, you can adjust various options ranging from system time and date to hardware settings, network configurations, and more. The Control Panel is in the process of being deprecated in favor of the Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience.

Tip: while the Control Panel still exists for compatibility reasons and to provide access to some settings that have not yet migrated, you’re encouraged to use the Settings app, whenever possible…

Forget Control Panel, Super God Mode offers ultimate way to access all Windows settings

Although Microsoft recently hinted at killing the Control Panel at some point in the future, this old part of the operating system is still with us, providing wider access to various settings in the operating system…

Sadly, the Control Panel > Settings app migration saga has been going on for over a decade (it started in 2012 with the release of Windows 8), and it is still far from over…

The so-called “Super God Mode” aims to fix that by offering the ultimate way to access all Windows settings, special folders, links, and more… By default, it can output over 1,200 links sorted in several folders depending on what Windows version you use (the list of links is not hard-coded)…

Change of heart ? Rejoice! Microsoft suggests it may never truly kill Windows Control Panel

..Microsoft has since tweaked the support article and the text “in the process of being deprecated in favor of the Settings app” has now been wiped and has been replaced with “many of the settings in Control Panel are in the process of being migrated to the Settings app” perhaps indicating that the company itself is not certain on whether it will ever truly be able to deprecate Control Panel completely. Or at the very least, it is not going to happen any time soon…

          hahaha lol
MS can’t fully get rid of the old Control Panel UI without the risk of breaking some stuff

    • #2698503

while the Control Panel still exists for compatibility reasons and to provide access to some settings that have not yet migrated, you’re encouraged to use the Settings app, whenever possible…

That link does not contain a “drop-dead” date for control panel but does contain the same “it’s not all migrated yet” statement; just like what they’ve been saying for the past four years.

Without an actual the control panel will no longer be available after ??/??/????, exactly what make this announcement any different that all the previous ones they’ve issued??

    • #2700000

      Apropos of this…

Well, reading that page, one specific phrase triggered me immensely. It was the totally deluded statement regarding Settings, reading: “…Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience”. Ah, the modern and streamlined experience! Hot garbage. Well, for the umpteenth time, I will talk some more about Control Panel, Settings, the infestation of low-IQ touch-based stuff on the desktop, and such.[…]

The whole article is well worth reading. Dedoimedo at his caustic best.

Support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People will end on December 31, 2024

..Support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People will end on December 31, 2024. We’re currently in the process of moving existing users to the new Outlook for Windows. After December 31, 2024, users will no longer be able to send and receive email using Windows Mail and Calendar. Any local emails, calendar events, and contacts stored in Mail, Calendar, and People will remain exportable following the steps in Export emails and contacts from Windows Mail or People and import to new Outlook.

Users will continue to have the option to go back to Windows Mail and Calendar through a toggle in Settings > General > About Outlook, in the Outlook for Windows app. ..

      * Microsoft tries hard to push users to the new Outlook.

      • #2716224

I have installed an older version of the Mail & Calendar app as described here.

In order to prevent Microsoft updating the app to the latest one, which forces the New Outlook on the user, I have turned off automatic updates for Microsoft Store apps. This can be done by opening Microsoft Store, clicking on your profile at the top of the window, clicking on Settings and there you can turn off App updates.

These changes remain even after performing a Windows Update.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year. If Mail & Calendar do stop working I’ll move to Thunderbird for a mail client. No way will I accept clunky, ad-riddled New Outlook.

I apologize if this has been covered before, but I didn’t see mention of what Grok told me this evening:

The “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” feature, used to create system images, is deprecated in Windows 11 as of May 2025. While it still works, Microsoft encourages alternatives like third-party backup solutions or OneDrive for file backups.

This evening on my new Win11 system I created a system image on an external USB drive

After I completed the image I went to “look at it” and got a ton of permissions errors…

Something that never happened in Win10 🙁

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) has been deprecated since Windows 1709

        System Image Backup (SIB) Solution

This feature is also known as the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) legacy control panel. For full-disk backup solutions, look for a third-party product from another software publisher. You can also use OneDrive to sync data files with Microsoft 365.

Windows 10 22H2 has a Windows Backup app.

          That’s interesting … Thanks Alex.

Windows Backup sounds potentially cool, but if I’m recovering from a hard drive crash for example… it seems like I’d have to first install Win11 and then restore from backup rather than just launching the imaging program and restoring the image “all at once”?

Or have I read that incorrectly?

Sounds like the migration part of the tool may still be in development?

For giggles I plugged in an external drive to my new Win11 laptop and when I launched the backup utility it would not backup and complained that I had no network connection. I guess it only backs up to  OneDrive?

I ask as I am now just starting the move from an old Win10 to a new Win11 laptop

Retirement: Bing Search APIs on August 11, 2025

Bing Search APIs will be retired on  August 11, 2025. Any existing instances of Bing Search APIs will be decommissioned completely, and the product will no longer be available for usage or new customer signup.

Note that this retirement will apply to partners who are using the F1 and S1 through S9 resources of Bing Search, or the F0 and S1 through S4 resources of Bing Custom Search. ..

I ask as I am now just starting the move from an old Win10 to a new Win11 laptop

You should backup your data and re-install all software on the new PC.
Locate software licenses from your Windows 10.
Don’t use software that claims to move applications…

Microsoft backup uses OneDrive and doesn’t create a full image backup.

        Thanks Alex!

Being just a tad OCD I do have all the license keys safely stashed.

I’ll just do it the old-fashoned way and figure out which 3rd-party imaging tool to use…

One more thing for the to-do list   :-/
