Thank you for the update. Unfortunately Microsoft does not have a solution for Outlook and is only trying to buy more time until they can come up with something better.
The fact is that regardless of the Outlook patch, I consider that Windows needs to be patched with priority up to and including the June 2017 Monthly Security Rollup for each OS. There may be an inconvenience of Windows Search working inconsistently in Outlook, which I find preferable to having personal files encrypted subject to ransomware.

      LOL!

      Love the understatement.   🙂

I never use Outlook, always Webmail. Am I in any way affected by the Outlook patch problems?

Is there any reason why I should install Outlook security updates, even when I never use it as my email client?

      Thank you.

If you are not using Outlook, then you are not affected by Outlook problems.

However, if you have MS Office installed on your computer, you should be patching it for security reasons. And if it includes Outlook (even if you are not using it) you should include the Outlook patches for security reasons as well.

I would add here that because Outlook is not in use but installed, it is even more recommended to patch it for security, as the functionality issues which are potentially introduced by the latest update would not affect you.

Microsoft updated the page mentioned in the first post on July 5. New Outlook updates are available.

So, this one… “July 5, 2017, update for Outlook 2010 (KB4011042)”, is not showing in my SCCM, which gets updates through WSUS.

Are these fixes just being offered to resolve “one-off’s” and Microsoft will roll them into a cumulative update in the future?

I think these are fixes for those who need them. They will probably be rolled into Tues. patches.
