To my surprise, my system invited me to update this morning. I backed up my system and started the process. Everything went well – no error messages – but after the final reboot, I was back in 8.1 Pro, just like I started with. Windows Update says “Some updates were not installed”. Anyone else run into this issue?

Edit: Tried it a second time with the same result. I guess I have to wait and see what’s up. The MS download servers are running really fast – the 2699 MB download only takes about 15 minutes.
Further Edit: I downloaded the update software, created an ISO and tried the install from that. Same result, with a slightly different error message: “The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation”. There are some suggested fixes for the C1900101 error message on the answers.microsoft forum, among them: Disable anti-virus (I am running Windows Defender); disconnect all USB devices (I tried that – same result); disconnect all network connections (!) after the download has completed, reboot lots of times, try again, etc. A few others are reporting this issue. I can’t see anything in the system logs other than the message that the Windows 10 update failed.
I guess I just wait. If anyone runs into a better solution to this issue, please let us know.
Another edit: MS has a recommendation of trying the install after a clean boot. I did that, and it still fails with the same error message.
Another Edit: I updated the AMD video drivers to the Win 10 version. The installation still fails with the same error message.
