AskWoody LoungerNovember 14, 2013 at 4:01 pm #1422878Have you made any recent changes just before the problem started?
I would immediately run a full scan using your AV app of choice and MalwareBytes Antimalware. There are also several online malware scanners. Malware often results in failed updates.
Next I might try a System Restore to a point before the problem began. Unfortunately malware can cause this step to fail as well.
This is a great time when a recent System Image would be invaluable. Any chance you created a System Image before the failure?

Yes UI ran three different deep scans with no virus nor malware found. I then ran sfc /scannow again with nothing found.I’ll try a system restore

AskWoody LoungerNovember 21, 2013 at 7:12 am #1424197Just came across this in the last 2 days Bot net activity by the look. have a look at your service and make sure the BITS service is running Usually bad guys de register the WU type services. Look at the Windows/windowsupdate.log It will give you a hint, post the last 20 line. On machine had the WuAuSrv registry keys deleted from all the control sets in the hive. Some times the RPC service stopping can cause this. One more unusual one is the Intel matrix storage manager can cause this too! This raid controller tricks Win7 into thinking the security descriptors hashes are wrong and fails to excecute to protect the system

AskWoody LoungerNovember 21, 2013 at 8:24 am #1424213If this is a Windows XP machine, I’ve had problems with Windows Update for the past couple months. The only thing I’ve found to finally fix it is to download the install agent and run it first (make sure you have SP3 already on the XP machine). Google “windowsupdateagent30-x86” and the first link should be the microsoft one for this executable.

AskWoody PlusDecember 22, 2013 at 1:56 am #1430548I’ve had a similar problem for many months. I can’t even get the MS Updates page to check my computer for required updates. It just sits with the bar moving all the time, never gets anywhere. I have not even had any update notifications for months. Have tried MS Fixit centre, etc, as suggested by MS, with no luck. I am using XP SP3.

If you are using IE8, try downloading and installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2898785) separately. If you are using a different version of IE see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS13-097 – Critical for download links for various versions.

AskWoody MVPDecember 25, 2013 at 7:28 pm #1431314Joe, it looks as if it is working, there are 54 Criticals being installed, as I write. Many thanks for the suggestion.
Great!! Glad you go it working. NOTE: Microsoft is still working on a permanent fix. You may have to hunt down the next IE cumulative update if you run into this problem again.
