• Update block Win10 2004

I have a Surface Pro 3, a Surface Pro 4 as well as a really old desktop I7 (106A5 processor) machine. All three are currently up to date running (except Aug 2020 patches) Win v1909. The “Windows 2004 update is coming” screen has been displayed on the update page in settings forever. How do I find out out why I am being blocked from updating (not that I really want to update)? It has been displayed for so long I am concerned that this block may never disappear and I will get left behind when v1909 hits end of life. Also how can I ensure that I am sending Microsoft enough telemetry to reliably determine if the update block is warranted if this is even the reason why the update block has persisted for so long.  I have tweaked the settings on these machines so often I no longer remember what I am sending to MS and what I am blocking. I’d like to figure out what MS thinks the problem is with updating these 3 computers to v2004 in terms that I can understand.

Can the 2004 is coming message be made to disappear from the update page it takes up a lot of screen real estate. What does the community recommend? Download the update tool and try to install v2004 anyways?

    Thx in advance.

I should mention that the surface pro 3 and pro 4 are the tablet models not laptops.

” How do I find out out why I am being blocked from updating (not that I really want to update)?”

      answer – you don’t

in File Explorer, check the “C:\Windows\appcompat\appraiser” folder, delete the Appraiser_AlternateData.cab, APPRAISER_TelemetryBaseline_xxxx.bin files (ex. APPRAISER_TelemetryBaseline_20H1.bin, APPRAISER_TelemetryBaseline_19H1.bin & APPRAISER_TelemetryBaseline_UNV.bin), reboot and try to check for updates again

also maybe you have some old or outdated drivers that need to be updated before the v2004 feature update can be offered thru WU as certain outdated drivers may prevent the v2004 offering.

what kind of audio & video hardware do your MS surface devices have?
use tools like HWInfo or Speccy to gather more details (like graphics & audio) about other hardware.

As I indicated previously, I deleted the files you mention. They were recreated in their original location this morning and when I checked the update screen the v2004 is coming message has disappeared. Yesterday when I dropped feature update delay from 365 days t0 50 wushowhide did display the v2004 update which I promptly hid, but the hold screen still appeared on the update page.

With it gone on the desktop machine, I’ll now delete the files on one of the surface pro devices and duplicate the wushowhide process and see if the nag msg  eventually disappears  on that device too.

The block message has disappeared from all 3 of my computers now. I deleted the above files on only two of them so I suspect the deletes were not really necessary in the first place. More MS shenanigans.

Since I don’t want to actually upgrade I think I’ll hold off checking for updates. I just want the v2004 coming notice to disappear from my update screen in settings. Although I have never seen the optional updates offered that some have reported, I’d settle for that instead. I’ll go looking for those telemetry files. deleting them seems harmless enough.

The notice from 2004 , old : your pc isn’t ready for 2004 which has been replaced by : 2004 is on its way but isn’t ready for your pc… has vanished ~ 2 weeks ago, so now there is no notice at all.

        1909 pro.

I had your notice until 2 weeks ago. Now I have none.
Both cases doesn’t mean a thing.

download and run the update assistant from microsoft, it will tell you if you’re ready, then either continue or get out. I have a surface pro 3 and 2004 was offered in June. I did not have anything weird installed on it and it’s been fine since with both Jul and Aug updates. Also, you have ten days where you can go back to prev version.

Answer – Microsoft doesn’t know too, because if Microsoft did know they would have shown the reasons for the block. Microsoft’s AI rules the company, not Nadella.
