I have installed a new second hard drive. I don’t have any bays left, so I left it sitting up and down in the case, as opposed to the normal flat position.

Is this going to be alright????

Thank you Cowboy, very interesting! I ain’t going to worry about it.. ……except for regular backups of course.

I always thought that CDs were mounted horizontally because, if they were mounted vertically, all the data would fall off and collect in a large heap at the bottom! time

I seem to remember that, many years ago, a particularly ignorant Managing Director was visiting our mainframe computer room and asked what was the purpose of the two-foot deep false floor, on which all the mainframe equipment stood. “Ah,” someone said, “that’s in case we have a problem with the disk drives. The void under the false floor is to hold all the data that would come off the hard disks, so that it doesn’t wash into the corridor”. He seemed quite happy with the explanation… innocent

Hard drives live quite happily at the vertical or horizontal, but I would be a bit concerned if you weren’t able to “secure” the drive in some way. Even if the case isn’t moved, it could be bumped and if the drive has enough room to “bang around,” well who knows. I was once told by someone who should know that one should NEVER move a hard drive while it is powered on and spinning. Obviously that would negate the viability of all laptops!

I think I’d be more concerned with air-flow disruption within the case now. HD and CD-ROM bays are in place to hold the “maximum” number of devices in “Case X”. If you’ve got to many devices now, the lack of, or disrupted, airflow may be a bigger concern, than the physical orientation of the extra device.

      Cowboy,
I agree with you on this. While a HD may WORK OK in the vertical position, the IDEAL mounting is horizontal. ( for the reasons you stated )
