I am getting up to 20 MSMessage windows that pop up at any time. Will the antispam programs stop this?

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2003 at 11:09 pm #674614I dont know of any program that will block such things on MSN Messenger. If your email address is listed publicly that could be a contributing factor. Windows/MSN Messenger should prompt you when you are added to someone’s contact list, and I believe that process disallows “spam” messages. Are you sure this is MSN Messenger, and not the Messenger Service? Lately there has been a lot of discussion on this particular topic. Innovative spammers are using the service, which is turned on by default in XP, to send messages. Can you post a screen shot of what you’re receiving?
In the meantime, go to Start – Run and enter services.msc. When the services console appears, find the Messenger service and set it to disabled – there’s no good use for it unless you’re on a corporate network, and rarely even then. This is NOT the instant messenger that goes by the same (and confusing) name.

If you go to http://www.GRC.com[/url%5D (Gibson research) they have a small program called ShootTheMessenger which disables the messenger. This works but I like the solution offered by mark Start – Run and enter services.msc. I agree, It is very annoying.
Good luck

AskWoody LoungerJune 2, 2003 at 4:56 pm #681750I just got an XP laptop and my first stop was browsing the posts at Woody’s XP lounge for helpful hints, heads up on problems I might encounter. I had read about the infamous Messenger intrusions, but until now had no reason to fear them. Using your start-run services.msc solution, I just diabled this feature. One less headache to deal with down the road. Thanks.
