• Unwanted file association

    Good Afternoon

    I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1909.

There is no e-mail client installed on this laptop but with Hotmail.com used. Recently, in trying to open an e-mail with file format .eml  (from Mailstore Home ) I have unwittingly linked the format to open in Notepad.

This does open the e-mail but only in the notepad type text which is not what was wanted or intended .

I really want to remove this file association but have no idea how to do it.  Please can somebody help me out ?

    Regards,

    Roy.

Settings App\Apps\Default Apps “Choose default apps by file type” or “Choose default apps by protocol.”

      Hello PKCano

      Thank you for the reply.

I have followed your links but nothing seems to be there to help:-

      1) Default apps by file type – shows .eml with a box next to it named just ‘Notepad’.  Right or left clicking on any of this does not give me any options to delete the association.

      2) Default apps by Protocol – no reference at all anywhere about either .eml or Notepad.

Am I missing something somewhere or is there another place to look?

      Regards,

      Roy.

You need to be using an Admin ID, not a Standard ID.

You left click on the default app icon (right column) and pick the program you want to be the default from the popup.
You replace the associated program Notepad) with the program you want to open that file extension. In other words, you replace Notepad with whatever mail client you want to use (the Win10 built in Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc)

There’s another way to force a file association.  If you have any .eml files on your computer, locate one in File Explorer (or a similar program), right-click, and select “Open with”.  If you do not then see the program you want, click on “More apps”.  If you still do not see the program you want in the resulting list, scroll to the end of the list and select “Look for another app on this PC”.  This will open an explorer-type window where you can browse to the location of the program you want, and select it.  At whatever stage of finding the program you want, be sure to check the box “Always use this app to open .eml files”.
