I have cable modem. At times, when going to random Web sites, the dialup connection dialog box pops up. I don’t even have any dialup connections configured.
When I close the box, IE goes into offline mode. I go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab and “Always dial my default connection” is selected. I change it to “Never dial a connection” and then surf a little bit and the box comes up again and IE goes offline. I check the connections tab and it’s at “Always dial my default connection” again.
LAN setting is at “Automatically detect settings.” Proxy server setting is at “Automatically detect settings.”
I have selected “Never dial a connection” and restarted IE, and even rebooted the computer, but the problem keeps coming back.
Now my sister tells me that the same thing is happening to her computer. She says it just started happening Saturday, and she hadn’t made any configuration changes to anything.
I have heard that unscrupulous Web sites could possibly make changes to the IE settings to force you to dial out to pay for services. Could they apply a registry setting to force a dialup? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
