I don’t really know if this is an Access problem, but here it is. We have a network database which I created. Just recently, when I try to open the database, I get the message, ‘You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time. If you proceed to make changes, you might not be able to save them later’. If I click ‘ok’, the message appears again. This occurs about 8 times, and then I eventually get into the database. I could understand if the database was opened in edit mode, but it isn’t. I also tried to open a form example I downloaded, which gives a message when you first open it that the forms in the database can’t be edited. This has been protected by the creator, but again this message appears 8 times. Don’t know if any one has any suggestions, but I don’t know why this is happening.

The message ‘You do not have exclusive access to the database…’ usually occurs when the database has already been opened by another user and you try to open a form or report in design view, not if you open a form in form view or report in preview mode. Do you have code that opens a database object in design view when the database is opened?

No. This is what is strange. This has never happened before. If I try to open the database in design view and someone is in, I get the message, but now I’m getting it just when I try to open the database.

Is this one database or split (frontend/backend), and does each user have a separate frontend copy?

You might also try checking your Access settings to make sure the “Track Name AutoCorrect info” checkbox is cleared (from menubar, select Tools, then the General tab).

This problem happens (rarely, but occasionally) to us on a network, and the more I type this, the more wrong I think I must be in how it actually occurs — but let me describe what I was first going to write, although now I’m not sure it works this way:

Users A, B, and C have “modify” privs on the parent folder, where the database resides. These users have read & write privs to the database.
Someone adds user D to have read privs on the database — and also neglects to add them with “modify” privs to the parent folder (usually, giving them “read”).
That means that when a user A, B, or C opens the database, and then D access it, and then A, B, or C closes it, then when D is left, there privs don’t allow them to delete the lock file, and subsequent users, even with modify privs, only seem to get read-only access the database. — Once again, I am not sure now if the scenario I just painted is what actually occurs, but I know I solve the problem by deleting the lock file (and making sure all authorized users have “modify” privs to the folder, which makes locking down the rest of the folder a hassle, but there it is).

All users need read/write/delete priviligles to the folder than contains the database.

I don’t know if relevant, but it caused similar problems to me once. Have you checked there is not (I think) an .ldb file of the database on the system, being an unclosed db caused by a error which was resolved and highlighted later doing a compile of the db code. Hope it’s relevant.

Sorry I’m only just getting back to you all, but still trying to work out what’s going on. I tried to log on to a database yesterday, when I knew most of the users should have been logged off. I still got the error message. Our IT guy tells me that no users privilieges have been changed, so I don’t know what’s going on. It looks as though the lock file is not being closed when some users exit the database.

Hello, I am new to this. My problem is this. I imported an excel file into access 2003 and created a form with the information. I can not figure out how to save this file to the server. I need help please!!
