I recently moved to a new computer, and in the process changed from using Outlook 2002 (XP) to 2003. I use an IMAP e-mail account, and have rules to move messages into different IMAP folders on receipt, depending on the sender / recipient and / or subject. I imported the rules and folders (using “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard”), and they still work fine, but when a message is moved from the Inbox to another folder, the unread message count for that folder does not update.

Consequently, using the rules is pointless: I get notified that a new message has arrived, but in order to find out where it has gone I have to view all messages in the Inbox (normally I have it set to hide deleted messages), see where this message will have been moved to, and then go to its folder. In Outlook 2002 this worked much better (although not perfectly: the unread message count for the folder would not update immediately, but after a few minutes it would show up).

I have checked the box next to all these folders in the “Send / receive all” group under “Define send/receive groups”, but to no avail. Is this a known bug? Does anyone know of a solution? It effectively makes rules pointless on an IMAP account.

    Thanks,

    Alex

Can you use a search folder for this? My configuration came with one called “Unread Mail,” which appears to search across the entire Exchange mailbox. I have no idea whether it works with an IMAP mailbox…

Search folders do give you the unread message counts for IMAP folders – but only if you’ve already clicked into that folder, and it’s updated the message count in the folder list! It seems that until you enter an IMAP folder, it has no way of polling the unread messages.
