• Unread items in Outlook

On my home computer, I have all of my emails listed in groups according to teh email account from which they have come. To the right of each account name, Outlook lists how many items are in the group and how many are unread.

In my work computer, my Outlook emails are grouped according to date. To the right of each date, there is no indication of how many items and unread messages are in each group. How can I get Outlook to display that for me?

    Regards,

In your navigation pane, right click on the folder (such as inbox) and select Properties. Now, select the item you want to see (should be about in the middle).

After I get to Inbox Properties, which tab to do I go?

Looks like Administration | Initial View on Folder | Group by From, OK out, should do what you want. (Always look around in the dialogs, there’s not that much in many of them, and you may learn something else.)

        The “General” tab.

          The “General” tab.

Joe, is that in Outlook 2007?

I should have mentioned I have Outlook 2003.

I went to the Inbox properties / Administration / Initiatial view on folder / Group by from, but I still can’t see how many unread items are in each group. In fact, that didn’t even change anything that I can perceive.

I then went to the General tab of the Properties dialogue, and saw that “Show number of unread items” was checked (“Show total number of items” was not). However, this does not get the total of unread items to display above each group (e.g, 10 unread items today; 3 unread yesterday; 2 unread Wednesday; 4 unread last week). Rather, I think that just gets the total number of unread items to be displayed next to the Inbox folder in the panel on the left.

John, can you attach a screenshot (not too large, if you have a large monitor crop it in Paint or Picture Manager, but legible, and censored of anything you do not want seen) of the at-work view you would prefer to see? Maybe we can figure out what needs to be done if we can see that.

The first file is how it looks. The second file is how I want it to look, with an annotation of how many unread items there are in each group.

OK, I don’t use multiple accounts, so I can’t test exactly what you want, but try this:

Right click the message list header and select field chooser. Then select All Mail fields in the top dialog, then drag “Email account” to the field header and drop it where you want it, close the dialog. Then right click on the “Email account” field you just created in the header, and click “Group by this field”. Does that help?

What and where is the message list header? I’m using Outlook 2007.

What and where is the message list header?

The column headings, e.g., From, Subject, Date. Note that in the two-line display, you don’t get the same context menu options. There you have to go through the customize dialog to change the fields.

Actually, I don’t want the different email accounts to be shown. I simply want the number of read and unread emails in each group to be displayed. For example, under the Yesterday group, next to the word “Yesterday,” I want it to say something like “634 items, 6 unread.” The same for the Last Week group and all the others.

        You said 2003 a couple posts back…
