    Unprecedented Google Cloud event
by Ron Amadeo  –  5/17/2024  –  Ars Technica

“Buried under the news from Google I/O this week is one of Google Cloud’s biggest blunders ever: Google’s Amazon Web Services competitor accidentally deleted a giant customer account for no reason. UniSuper, an Australian pension fund that manages $135 billion worth of funds and has 647,000 members, had its entire account wiped out at Google Cloud, including all its backups that were stored on the service. UniSuper thankfully had some backups with a different provider and was able to recover its data, … (shoutout to the hero at UniSuper who chose a multi-cloud solution). – – – [bottom line] = Anyway, don’t put all your eggs in one cloud basket.”

Who was it that said, “The Cloud: your stuff on someone else’s computer.”

Seriously, though, there was a magazine long ago about LAN’s, WAN’s and Mirrored data centers, and how they should all play nice together…how frequently the mirrors were updated, safety in not having all the data in one geographic spot (fires, floods, meteor strikes, revolutions, etc). It pretty much came out to having vital data in at least three different geographic places, mirrored and backed up nightly.

And, of course, YOUR copy/backups. Suspenders AND belt. 🙂
