Unique Entries (Excel ’97)

I have a large spreadsheet that contains one column of data that consists of Part Numbers. There can be many entries for a single Part Number. Say, for example, that the part numbers are in Column A. I would like a list of the unique parts in Column B and the number of entries for the corresponding part Number in Column C.

I realize that I can Sort the part numbers to group them together, but I am hoping that there is an automated process for extracting the data I need.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Use the Advanced filter. You can copy to new location and tell excel to copy over only unique values only.

Another way is to…

Add a title directly above the list of numbers
Select the title and the list
Goto Data | Pivot Table
On the layout view, drag the title to the row field and also drag the title to the data field.
OK and Finish your way out of the pivot table.
(takes about 8 seconds to accomplish)

You wil have a list of all the part numbers with the count for each.
This list can be copied and pasted where you want.
