    Lots of choices

UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu and other Linux distributions without burning a CD.

You can either let UNetbootin download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file.

      ? says:

haven’t used Unetbootin yet, how does it compare with using mkusb or Gparted and Start Up Disk Creator? since Windoze was messing with my win7’s i learned Ubuntu and have made numerous Live USB’s and have installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and 16.04 LTS on sticks as well. i have had the best luck using Gparted in 14.04 and adding 4GB persistence then adding syslinux to the 16.04.

so, i’m ready to switch off win7 when the eol comes around.

if… microsoft gets it’s program together on 10 then maybe i’ll try it. a lot can happen in 3 years.

I use LinuxLive USB Creator. Only one I’ve used so I can’t compare, but it seems pretty good to make live USB bootable sticks. It’s on the LinuxLive website. I believe the official UBUNTU site also guided me to it.

BYW, I’m also preparing for the WIN& EOL and will probably convert all my machines to some version of Linux within the next few months.

Rufus works pretty well for Unbuntu errm latest is I believe 17.04amd64 for installing on UEFI systems. To my mind a whole lot quicker than UNETBOOTIN. Got the latest Unbutu Vers here but not committed to installing yet just using the trial/introductory desktop version, I have to say looking better than previous releases 🙂

I have been using Universal-USB-Installer from PenDrive Linux.  It has worked well for almost all of my Live Image creations.  I did have a problem, but unfortunately cannot remember which distro it was.  I was not a major distro.

I will have to look for UNetBootIn.  Thanks for the tip.

I’ve been using UNetbootin (for both Windows and Linux) for years and can confirm it makes creating a bootable USB (for any distro) very easy.

Unetbootin seems to work fine if you’re burning an iso in Linux to your USB, but I’ve found Rufus much more reliable for that in Windows.

Yesterday I used Unetbootin to create a Linux Lite flash drive. Everything worked very well, and it was very easy to use. The only negative to the whole experience was that it took a while for it to unpack the .ISO file, and there were no dots or progress bar moving on the screen, so I couldn’t tell if it was stuck or moving. I walked away for a few minutes then came back, and all was done.

Running Linux Lite from a flash drive worked like a champ, except that it wouldn’t save any changes I made in Linux Lite. (I thought that was the point of running Linux Live from a flash drive as opposed to running it from a DVD.) I don’t know if that limitation is in Unetbootin or in Linux Lite.

I use Rufus for all of my .iso writing to USB stick needs in Windows, and in Linux, the built-in utility called “USB Image writer” in the Linux Mint menu.    The package is called “mintstick” in the repo, so I am guessing it’s not a part of Ubuntu proper.  It doesn’t have as many options as Rufus, but it has always done the job quickly and effectively (producing bootable, error-free USB drives).
