Uncontrollable Scrolling

Am running Windows 7 and have been for awhile with no issues. All of the sudden when browsing in IE8 the screen starts scrolling down with out doing anything. I have a Logitech Trackball wireless with fresh batteries. I have even installed Firefox and still get this scrolling issue, also it is happening in Excel. I went to Logictech’s site and loaded and installed their software without success so I removed it and went back to the standard driver. While I had Logitech’s software installed there was a double down arrow as though you were pushing the scroll button on the mouse and if you push the up button the screen would scroll up with the double arrow up. You can move the wheel any direction to stop the motion but when you move the courser it will start scrolling again. I have scanned for virus with an up to date AVG with no results and there are no electronic gadgets near the wireless receiver. I have Googled searched and have tried various things as mentioned and this appears to be a problem but so far the things I have tried have brought no results and I am at a loss. My next step in my limited knowledge is to format C: but I don’t want to do that. Any ideas??

Hello..Do you have a spare “mouse” to try? (even a wired one) Sounds like something is up with the “trackball” Regards Fred

I did not think I had one but managed to find a wired mouse and scrolling control is normal. Right, something is up with the trackball. Gotta get the trackball sorted, I did not realize how much I hate a wired mouse.

Check your hardware, specifically your mouse and keyboard.
It’s either an infectious exploit, which I’ve never heard of, or an issue with your hardware.
Any thing from a stuck key on your keyboard to an issue with your “Trackball wireless” mouse.

I took the trackball apart and found an actual button, pushed it and it seems to have good action so I cleaned the dust off the contacts but have yet to test it.

David, if Freds idea does not work, uninstall Trackball in Device manager, power off PC, move TB USB to another port and restart PC.

Kinda did that, it’s a USB plug going through and adapter to a PS2 port. I uninstalled all the Logitech files and drivers and went back to the standard MS driver that came with Windows 7, no difference with the exception of there is no double down (or up) arrows while scrollong.

Does it exhibit the same behavior in safe mode (F8)? If not it may very well be a driver conflict

I looked in the device manager and it shows no conflicts.

The double-arrow usually shows up when you click the mouse wheel, after which simply positioning the mouse above or below the double-arrow causes scrolling. Sounds like the click sensitivity setting on your mouse wheel is too high.

By the way, which track ball do you have? The “thumb ball” or the centrally-mounted ball? I have the thumb-ball variety (wired) and it has a mouse wheel, I don’t know if the other style even has a mouse wheel.

After playing with the wired mouse for awhile I decided to take the trackball apart and try to clean the down scroll button. Thinking it might one of those little carbon dot that make contact with 2 pad on a printed circuit. To my surprise it was an actual button/switch surface mounted on a PC board. I pushed the button a few times and looked a little closer and noticed a bunch of dust around the connections, where it came from who knows. I blew the dust away put it all back together and it worked normally. So I plugged it back into the original port and all is fine.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the dust was some how conductive enough to cause a short.
