Unblocking blocked attachments (Outlook 2000)

Hi,

I have a member that is using Outlook 2000 and has found that Access attachments [.mdb] files are being blocked. I read Microsoft Knowledgebase article #318515 that explains how to modify the registry, but first it said to apply a fix

[“To customize the attachment security behavior in Outlook 2000 SR-1 and Outlook 2000 SR-1a, install a fix, and then modify the registry.”]

Where do you find the fix? What about Office 2000 SP2 & 3? is the fix need for those up dates. Are the registry modification instructions the same for SP 2 & 3?

Is there a better way to to work around this security blocking “feature”, i.e. freeware, shareware, etc.

The fix consists of installing Office 2000 SP3. The MSKB article you mention contains a link to get the latest service pack.

I have 3 PCs (1 on WinXP SP1; 2 on Win98SE) that are running Outlook 2000 SP3 and Ken Slovak’s Attachmate Options 1.86. So far, other attachments receive fine…but, for some reason, .EXE attachments are blocked. Any ideas?

You did move the .exe extension to Level 2 in the Attachment Security &Options tab of Tools | Options…? If so, I wouldn’t know. Ask the senders to mail a zip file with the exe.

Yes, in fact the Level 1 side is empty. I have corresponded with Ken via e-mail, but he didn’t have any ideas either. I have never had an issue with Outlook or Attachment Options, until now. I was hoping that I might get some more ideas from others on this message board.

Perhaps your virus checker or software firewall is blocking them before AttOpt sees them?

Thanks for the additional ideas…but no, that’s not it either. Anyone else have any ideas (other than either going back to SR-1a or upgrading them to Office 2003 )?

Popup blockers, ad blockers, and programs to protect the registry could cause problems to. oh.. what OS? is htere any chance you don’t have write permissions on the registry?

there is no reason why it shouldn’t work… nothing changed in the sr.

No popup blockers, ad blockers, or programs to protect the registry on any of the 3 affected PCs. As I stated, the OS is 2-Win98SE & 1-WinXP SP1. There shouldn’t be any registry permissions issues (certainly not on the two Win98SE PCs anway).

I have always stayed with SR-1a on Office 2000 specifically because of what Woody has said in his Office Watch newsletters (specifically about SP-2). I decided to go ahead with SP-3 since Woody stated that it was finally a good update and recommended it. Because I had no issues with SR-1a in the passed, is why I stated what I did about either uninstalling Office 2000 SP-3 to re-install Office 2000 and SR-1a ONLY – or to upgrade to Office XP SP-2…or 2003.

And, yes…something DID change in the SP. SP-2 and above added the Outlook E-mail Security Update into the SP (SR-1/1a did not include this update).

DaveA, it looks like I would not be able to use “DetachXP” as it is for Office XP/2002 (not 2000). Looks like it does the same (a little more, actually) as Ken Slovak’s Outlook Attachment Options, which I’m using.

Any other ideas?

Don’t have people send you EXE files. They are swimming against the tide (in a security sense) and ought to adopt safer computing habits before they blow a deadline.

Hi Dave: I knew I had downloaded a add in a couple of years ago that would do this for me, but I could not find it and it was no longer valid after I installed the new version of Office last year. I downloaded this DetachXP and loaded it. Then, looking through so old posts of mine, I found Post: 54217 and downloaded the com add in again. I like it much better than DetachXP as it becomes an option off of the Outlook menu. My question for you is now that I have installed Detach XP, can I just delete the file? There really is not a way to uninstall it is there? I know it modified registry settings, but if I put it back to the original settings, and then delete the file, will I be able to move forward with using the com add in?

Yes, you can just delete it, as it is a standalone “exe” file. But if you have made any shortcuts to it on the desktop or menu you will need to delete them also.
