Unable to “Send Page by E-mail”

Long-time reader, first-time poster.

I’ve recently upgraded a few machines from Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007. However, since the installation we have been unable to use several functions of Internet Explorer — those that use Outlook such as “Send Page by E-mail” and “Send Link by E-Mail”. The options are there to select but, upon clicking them, very little happens — the hourglass appears for a second but then disappears, and then nothing else.

I have found one way to get it working — this is by using these functions with Outlook closed. However, it makes very little sense that they refuse to function when Outlook is open at the same time.

I have tried quite a number of things to fix this — a diagnostic (Help > Office Diagnostics) in Outlook, checking to see what programs are listed as defaults in Internet Explorer, checking the default program access in Add/Remove Programs, and a few other minor tweaks that have got me nowhere. I’ve done a search on this forum as well but posts are either out-of-date or different to this issue.

The machines are all using Microsoft Office 2007 with Windows XP SP2. One of the machines has SP3 on it with the same results. The machines were previously using IE6 when we first identified the problem, but it still remains even after an upgrade to IE8.

Apologies if this should be in the Microsoft Office sub-forum but I wasn’t sure if the issue was IE-related or otherwise.

I just tried both Send Page and send link, Outlook ’07, and IE8 and both worked as they should.

There may be a reason: the registry often stores a setting to use DDE commands to interact with a running application rather using a command-line instruction. You could try turning off DDE: open Windows Explorer or My Computer, then Tools>Folder Options>File Types>”URL:MailTo Protocol”>Advanced, then select open and click Edit… and uncheck “Use DDE”. Does that make any difference?

jscher2000: I’m afraid not — exactly the same problem with it not loading.

I had a play around and I’ve been able to get it working by changing the file association from IE to Outlook but, of course, that breaks functionality elsewhere so it’s a bit of a useless workaround. So, unfortunately, I’m still stumped.

Have the opposite problem with IE8 send link/page and outlook 2007, win 7 64… IE8 starts up Outlook but outlook hangs. If outlook already started and running, it works fine.
