I can’t open the Download file in Windows 10.

Using Windows 10 latest patches. I’ve tried to open the Download file and it hangs with “Not Responding.” I’ve waited for up to an hour with no change. I’ve rebooted and run DISM and SFC and used a system restore point. All with no success.

I’m able to open all other files.

Exactly which “Download file” are you referring to? A more detailed description of the exact file and its location will help us help you.

Thank you for the reply. The Downloads i  am having issues with is a Systems Folder under This PC and Quick access.

          Look at:
          C:\Users\<your ID>\Downloads
          Can you open that folder?

    • #2747530

I can open the folder using C:\users\<my id>\downloads

The problem seems to be with the link you were originally using.
BTW, Downloads is a FOLDER (a container to put files in), not a file.
Can you highlight the Downloads folder that isn’t working in Explorer and tell us the path?

        Folder

    • #2747576

      \\XX-PC\Users\<my id>\Downloads

My error on files vs. folders. I really do know better. Thank-you for pointing it out so politely.

When it’s highlighted, is there anything in the pane on the right side? (see above screenshot)

        • #2747592

          No there isn’t.

          • #2747599

If there is nothing in the folder, then clicking on the icon in the left panel under “Quick Access” won’t do anything because it’s already open if you see the left panel with nothing in it.

            Does it seem OK now?

When I open the Download folder using the file explorer the progress bar only goes about a third and hangs, not responding.

When I tried to open the folder this time to answer your question I found several other folders shouldn’t be there.

I’m going to have to some few minutes in the morning to gather a better picture to send you. I really appreciate your help and patience.  I’ll try a get a screen shot for you.

Good morning. I’m trying to get a couple of screen shots to help you but i haven’t been successful. I press windows key and print screen simultaneously but nothing appears in the Pictures/screenshots folder.

I guess at 78, i’ve got something else to learn.

If i click on the Downloads folder in This PC teh progress bar goes about a third and then hangs.

When i click on the >next to the Downloads folder in This PC i find several folders – Applications Data, DOC tools_AddAutoCorrect_1.2, Files for STARTUP folder.

Right click on the Downloads folder under “Quick Access”
Click on “Unpin from Quick Access”

In Explorer, find the Downloads folder under your ID (<your ID>\Downloads) that works.
Right click on that Downloads in the left pane and choose “Pin to Quick Access”

        Now see if that works.

        Weatherguy,

Instead of using PrtScn to make a screenshot, use Windows Snip & Sketch to make & save the screenshot. Keep it pinned to your taskbar. Alternatively, you could use ShareX (especially good for windows that are to tall to fit on one screen) or PicPick (both available from MajorGeeks.com or OlderGeeks.com, which are both trusted sites for (tested safe) freeware.

P.S.: You should now mark this thread as “resolved“.

That works!  Thank you so much.  Your patience is astounding.
