can anyone help please, I have been trying to install Macrium Reflect free V5, but I keep getting an error message.

service Macrium Reflect image mounting service
    ReflectService.exe could not be installed
verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services

not sure if this is the right section for this post, as I have had a similar problem with installing services, when I replaced my printer/scanner, (can’t remember how I got round this problem last time !), so I don’t think it is a software problem, rather a problem with the setup of my pc, the computer is setup with only one user, I did try installing in safe mode, but with the same result. Does anyone have any idea’s, thanks for your help,

Run an AV/AM tool, independant to what you currently have, to check for infection first. I recommend Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware.
Perform a registry scan with CCleaner’s Optimization and Cleaning tool.

If you have had a prior version installed previously check to ensure that it has been fully removed.
Check for the reflectservice by going to “services.msc” from the Window’s run box

      If a prior version is there;
      sc stop reflectservice
      Then
      sc delete reflectservice

You could then re-attempt the V5 installation.

Clint, thanks for your advise, I do use Malwarebytes, and have run CCleaner, I have not used reflect before, so no earlier version, but i did look in services and reflect is not listed, was stumped after that, hope this means something.

      Bob,
Hello… Try to “right click” the installer and run as an “Administrator” …If you then have a “Stop” during the install .. Most times you have to “take ownership” of the folder that the error message gives you. Regards Fred

Fred, not tried right clicking on installer before, will give it a go, not that good when I get too far under the hood, but will see what happens, thanks for your help.

Fred, I right clicked on installer, I am the only user listed, if I open the drop down box, it is just my name, but then I am asked for a password, which I have not set, as I am the only user, so I can only select the current user, there is no mention of an administrator, I did uncheck the box to protect against unauthorized program activity, but the install still stops at the services, any clues ?

            Bob ,
Hello … I am confused … When you “right click” on the Macrium Reflect installer you should see as an option (context menu) “Run as Administrator” I have no idea of what it is that your speaking about, drop down box? … Please clarify  Regards Fred

    • #1302125

      Fred,
Sorry I am getting ahead of myself, when I right click on the installer, the only options are :- OPEN or RUN AS…, as well as the usual scan with, send to etc, there is not an option to run as administrator, after I clicked on RUN AS…, I then get the window with a security warning and the options to run the program or cancel, if I click on run, I then get the window, titled – Run As, with the options to select current user – protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity – the following user, which has the drop down box for user name, then another box for password, but I do not use a password to log onto my computer, hope this makes sense, very sorry about the confusion, on another note I did not make clear I am using XP Home, not sure if this makes any difference,

        Bob,
Hello… OK i fired up my XP OS, and now I’m on the same page as you… If you want you can open control panel (user Accounts), and set up a password “Administrator Account” then you will have that option ..To run as “Administrator” there may be other ways to add this to your right click context menu … I’ll have a look around ..(I’m new to XP just about a month) and post back if i find an easier way  Regards Fred

          Fred,
I have looked in user accounts, my account is already listed as Computer Administrator, could this be why I don’t have the right click option, to run as an Administor ?

            Bob,
Hello… You need to setup a password for your “Administrator” account… Then you will be able to run as one ( after Password input)… I think that without one …your just another user.. Regards Fred

I have set a password to my account, but still get the same result, when trying to install Reflect, I did try running in safe mode as an Administrator, but the install stops at the same place, I can’t install system services, as listed in my first post, sorry to be a pain, I thought this would be an easy fix, I don’t suppose yourself or Ted have any other idea’s, thanks both of you for your help,

              Bob,
Hello… OK …If your indeed logged in as a “Administrator” (with password) .. If the program stalls it’s usually because you don’t have “permission” to access some folder file (MSI type etc.) When it stops you need to see what the error message says, Ex: “You don’t have permission to access Blah, Blah” you need to “take ownership” of what ever it is. “Right click” on the folder and select “properties” and set yourself as “Owner” and give yourself “Full Access” If you not sure how post back … I have had this happen, and you have to do this proceedure for a few folders to get the program to run. Regards Fred

looks like I could use a hand, I have opened Administrative Tools, but there is only a short cut to Services, not the actual program, if i open Services, I cannot find a way to open the properties, so I am stuck, not sure where the actual program is hiding, to go to it direct, could you point me in the direction please, thanks for all your help,

              Hi Bob,
I fired up my XP OS ..so i see what the problem is (No security Tab) Found this article may be of help (to both of us ) as i am new to XP MS support kb…Also you need to right click on the folder file that the Macrium installer gets stuck at ..and then select “properties” Sorry if i wasn’t clear … I’m reading this “kb” as well as i don’t have the “Security Tab” shown either … Vista and 7 have it available …not so in XP. Regards Fred

PS: I’ll post back if i make any progress …Maybe someone who is more familiar with XP will help out …

Found the answer…Follow my link and see attachments …

              Hi Fred,
Thanks for sticking with me so far, seems the further I look into the problem, the worst it gets, I have followed your attached thumbnails, but there is no option :- use simple file sharing, the option – show pop up description is there, but that is the last entry, could be getting to the root of the problem I guess ?, not sure where to go from here though, will have to keep digging
              Bob

not sure where to go from here though, will have to keep digging

              Bob,
Have no idea of why your XP OS doesn’t have that option …There has to be a way to “take ownership” of a folder file.. My next try would be to run “sfc /scannow” (input into “run” without quotes) If some MS file folder has become corrupt “System File Checker” will fix the problem … You may be prompted to load your XP disk if the i386 folder is not present on your PC. Regards Fred

PS: I’ll do some more checking around in the meantime…Think i found a problem…to access the security function in XP home …you have to do this procedure #19, from within “Safe Mode” XP Safe Mode

            • #1302453

              Fred
have just found the same problem, this option is not available in XP Home, did try logging into safe mode, then as administrator, but the option is still not there, I was going to try right clicking on the services folder, but I don’t know where to find it, I only have a short cut for it, can’t do anything with the services folder when it is open
              Bob

            • #1302461

              Bob,
As far as i know …you enter “Safe Mode” at boot time by keying F-8 (maybe different on your PC)…Regards Fred

PS: Just found this …Open “Run” and input “control userpasswords2” (no quotes)

Thanks for the update, still not getting anywhere, did try going into safe mode, right click on C drive and select security, then every user, allow full control in permissions, clicked advance and un-checked box for replace permission entries on child objects, re-booted, and you guessed it, still the same, will not install services, will have to have a think on this one, am on shifts at work this week, so may take a while to reply to any posts, sorry.

              Bob,
              No problem… try this procedure

              1. Boot PC into safe mode (F-8) before the windows loading screen…(Nothing to do with right clicking on C: drive)

              2. Follow post #19 to install the “Security Tab”. So when you right click properties on any file folder you can see it. (Security Tab)

              3. Re-Boot and right click on the Macrium Reflect icon, and choose properties… you now should see the “Security Tab”

              4. Click on Security Tab , and make sure that you set yourself as owner ..and give “full control” to yourself and “administrator” accounts.

              5. Run Macrium as “Administrator” ..if it stalls …follow the error message to the folder and take “Ownership ” of it and file that the error specified ..usually some MSI . Regards Fred

I have checked out the pages you suggested, but my account is an Administrator already, so not sure why I can’t get access to the services, to install Reflect,

      Hi Fred
sorry I am confusing myself, I did carry out post #24 from within safe mode, have also run sfc /scannow, but did not find any errors.

I have tried to follow your post #25, but the option is not there when in safe mode, hope you can make out the attached picture below
      29185-folder-options

the error message says that I do not have permission to install system services, where do I go and which folder do I right click on, to try and take Ownership of it, I have not been able to find a “Services” folder, I can only find a short cut for it, I hope this makes sense,
      Thanks for all your help

        Hi Bob,
I have a few ideas and also want to do some “Internet Searching” …I can’t make out anything from your Screenshot ..too small for my eyes..
        1. Just for fun (Experiment) go to FileHippo and download version 4.2.3638 of Macrium Reflect..And give it a try. I have reverted to that one because of their new (V-5) has some issues on my OS 4.2.3638 worked fine, in all respects.

        2. Do you have your system set to “see hidden files and folders”?

I’ll post back after i do some searching later today … Have to do some actual work .. Process firewood…Ugh! Regards Fred.. Try my “PS’s ” First.

        What “security” are you running?
What “Update” Level are you at with Xp?

PS: Found this and think it’s the answer…. it’s worth a read MWB Forum

PS: Also Found this ..It would explain why XP Home can’t see “Security Tab” Security Tab Installer

          Hi Fred

sorry have not been around, a bit of a family crisis turned up, am still trying to catch up, have downloaded the security tab installer, will need to back up some important files, before giving it a go, may try V4 first though, would be a lot easier if it works.
I do have my system set to show hidden files
am using Avast free AV – V6
          Online Armor V4
I do have auto updates on, so up to date

will post back with the results, may take a day or two, thank you for all your help so far, sorry for not getting back to you sooner

          Bob

, I have not been able to find a “Services” folder, I can only find a short cut for it, I hope this makes sense,

If you right click on the shortcut it should give you the path to where the actual file is located.

        • #1303703

Hi everyone, sorry been away for a while, hopefully got the crisis sorted, still no luck with installing Reflect, did try V4 but same result, unable to install services, I did download the security tab installer, but I had a warning window that it was not compatible with my windows version, as I don’t have a backup at the moment, and no Windows disc, (was pre-installed), am reluctant to try and install it. I did find an old post on the Reflect website, if it means something to anybody, it was for the same error, unable to install services, it goes as follows :-

You may have a problem with Windows MSI installer. Can
you type ‘msiexec /regserver’ from a command prompt?
            Hope this helps

I did try this myself, and got a message, “access denied” (Bob)

            next Yes …… I can.
            It didn’t help.

It appears that you may be right about an Installer
            issue.
I just tried installing Acrobat Pro which also starts a
service and received an error message much like the one
            I received with Reflect.
I will investigate this issue and report back.
Can’t imagine what would have caused this on a fresh
            install though.

Some time ago when installing software for my new Kodak All in one Printer, I did have trouble trying to install the Bonjour Service to get the scanner to work, can’t remember how I fixed it though !, sorry just remembered this. (Bob)

next post Turns out that you were right ….. sort of.
Somehow or another all Owner/Permissions for the file
system had been transferred to my account (silly me)
effectively locking out System (and everything else)
            from accessing it.
I fixed that and successfully installed Reflect.

Not sure if this means anything, but I have no idea how to check how the Owner/Permissions are set, but I guess it may be a good idea to look, in case it is causing the problem, if anyone can help please,
            Thank You
            Bob

              Bob,
Hello….Now that you have Macrium Reflect installed make sure that you “burn” the recovery disk and try it out …Load it in you DVDCD drive and try to boot from it. And also that it can “see” the Image that you made…Just don’t “Pull the Trigger” ..As far as the Ownership issue the only way that you can do it is to install the “Security Tab Installer” as it does not natively exist with your version of Windows. and without it you won’t get to the “Advanced Tab” that you need… Regards Fred

            • #1306591

              Hi Fred,
Sorry, think my post was a bit confusing, I have not managed to install Reflect as yet, guess I may have to bite the bullet and install the “Security Tab Installer”, just a bit nervous, as I don’t want to break my system without a backup.

Bob, must confess I did not read the whole thread, but have you considered this can be an issue with Online Armor? What happens if you change Online Armor to Learning mode and then try the install again?

      • #1306590

Ruirib, not sure what is going on, but I set Online Armor to learning mode, and tried to install Reflect, but a window flashes up preparing to install, then nothing happens, I left it for half an hour, still nothing, downloaded another copy with the same result, also does the same when not in learning mode !!, checked out task manager, reflect.exe is listed as using memory, but no cpu usage, just sits there.

Bob, check the programs list on OA, if you tried running it before, it may as well be blocked. Probably better to order the list by name so that you can find it.

Sorry for the slow response, am on shifts again, (feels like I am either sleeping or working !!), I have checked OA history, Reflect.exe is marked as allowed, not sure what is going on, I think I will try running CCleaner in case there is some junk around, from the other failed installs, will let you know how I get on, Thanks for your help

This is quite puzzling. I Googled up some results for
          msiexec /regserver “access denied”

One thread sounded quite similar to your situation. The inability to install programs was the result of bad settings for a third party firewall. As a test, try turning off your firewall temporarily. You could disconnect from the internet before you actually try to install Macrium Reflect.

            Rgrosz
Thanks for your reply, I checked out the firewall logs, there was no listing of the installer being blocked, but it does seem a good idea to turn it off and see what happens, for some reason the install program keeps stalling, I may have to contact Macrium to get the installer working, to see if the firewall was causing the problem, it does stall in safe mode as well, so not sure what is going on, hope I haven’t done something, will just have to keep plugging away,
            Bob

Yeah, just managed to install Macrium Reflect V4, could not get V5 to do anything, just kept stalling, deleted setup program, ran CCleaner and re-booted, switched off internet, turned off AV, firewall and every running program I could, ran V4 setup, got to cannot install services, clicked on continue, then window popped up again, unable to install services, the frustration kicked in I’m afraid and I kept clicking on try again, and wow it installed, not sure what happened, think I beat it into submission. So it is a big thanks for everyone for your help, think I may have given up without it. 😀

        Hi Bob,
Same thing here ! I realize that it’s no use in trying to solve the very same problem, after reading all the efforts and attempts that you made. It’s just a waste of time.

Besides, I’m astonished that Macrium does not even allow membership to it’s forum, if one doesn’t own a license for the paid version. This forum is supposed to help only those people who pay for something that not even can be installed on our system. While other software is installed without any problem !

          Merel,
Hello…and welcome to the lounge…Macrium Reflect Is a good program and performs as advertised, “Imaging” and now “Cloning” (version 5’s). Some, at times…. because of Hardware or OS configuration , have problems installing their software …Many times the problem turns out to be a “Ownership” or “Run as Administrator” type of thing. As far as not being able to “join their forum”, most problems have been addressed either in their “KB’s”, or FAQ’s, or have been posted already, and you can search through them. Hey Reflect is a great program, and given away for Free… what more do you expect?.. All of the Imaging programs that I’m familiar with make you jump through some sort of hoop or another, and some don’t work as well…(even the pay for ones).. Just Fix it…might take some work …but it’s “do-able” Regards Fred

          • #1316634

Hi Merel, It sure took a while it install, but it is a good product, just takes a while to get Macrium and Windows to play nice together, think the main problem was I am running XP Home, so as Fred has said, you need to be able to instruct Windows to allow Macrium Reflect to install the services, or “take ownership”, which is not easy in XP Home, which will be a quicker way to install, rather than trying to force it into submission. If it is a problem in XP Home, you would have thought there would be a different installer ?, or install method. I did go round and round the FAQ’s etc on the Macrium site, was a pain that you could not post any questions, other free programs I use, don’t allow you technical support, but you can post on there forums, at least they would know what problems there are with their product, rather than leaving you to search the web for answers. You could try disconnecting from the web and turning off as many running programs as you can, before installing, or try installing, the Security Tab Installer, as I did not have a backup, I was trying to do as little as poss before I could backup my system, if you follow the advise you will get there.
            Bob:^_^:

Hi, All Forum Members in this Thread. Sorry I came across this Thread so late.

The problem is in Avast 6. I have personally had experience with this product on Windows XP SP2 and SP3 (although my version is XP Pro). Avast does something called File System Protection, or System Kernel Protection. This feature prevents anything (even the Windows Installers) from changing what Avast determines to be “protected System files”. You would have to turn off the Avast File System Active Shield to correct this. Even then, a System Kernel File would not necessarily become available for modifications. You might have to uninstall Avast entirely, then install Macrium Reflect, and then reinstall Avast. Or better yet, replace Avast with MSE and use a second-opinion scanner like Malwarebytes for added peace of mind. Avast 6 has been in my experience way too aggressive at protecting Windows XP. It even forbade me permission to empty my Recycle Bin!
