I have 2 PCs and am unable to updateKB5044273

I receive the following error message “There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80073701)”

I’ve tried numerous fixes, but nothing has worked:

This didn’t work.  I’ve tried 7-8 fixes and still can’t get it to work. This is still happening on 2 of my computers.  I’m also getting some software requesting to update windows.

Do I need to do an in-place refresh of Windows 10.  One of my laptops has recently developed a windows audio service issue that won’t play sound after a long troubleshooting session to get the windows audio service to behave.

        Sometimes I really hate Windows….

I realize that you may have already done the following, but take a look at it anyway to see if you may have not have performed all of the commands listed. This is a post authored by our own Susan Bradley on how to reset the Software Distribution folder that Windows Update uses to do its’ “magic”.

If you indeed HAVE done ALL of those commands listed and they’ve run to completion successfully but that STILL hasn’t been successful with fixing your issue, then what you’ve mentioned may very well be the fix…an over-the-top reinstallation of Windows. In that case, here’s a link on just how to do it, again written by our own Susan Bradley:

Before attempting the over-the-top reinstallation, be sure to read the entire thread on that  page, as there are several nuggets of wisdom pertaining to the procedure on Windows 10 contained within the thread as well as other related information for other versions of Windows, such as Windows 8.1. Because of that, you need to pick and choose your way through it.

And before you do anything else, you need to make a full disk image of the computer and have a rescue boot USB made by your imaging software that you know boots the system. It is also suggested that you make a file backup of your personal information.

Ok.  I’ve done all the backups as indicated.  I’ve done everything above as listed.  I still can’t get Windows to do an over-the-top installation. It keeps getting stuck on the looking for updates in the install.  I left it for over 4 hours and it didn’t proceed further.  I’m at a loss as to what the heck is going on and I don’t know how to fix this.

      How are you accessing setup.exe?
On the booted computer, are mounting the ISO and using Explorer to access and double click on setup.exe in the mounted ISO?
On the booted computer, do you insert an install USB and use Explorer, navigate to the USB and double click on setup.exe?
Are you connected to the Internet during the process?
Is there a place at the beginning of the over-the-top install where you are asked if you want to include updates?
If you disconnect from the Internet before you start, does the over-the-top install complete?

        I am access setup.exe

On the booted computer, are mounting the ISO and using Explorer to access and double click on setup.exe in the mounted ISO

Are you connected to the Internet during the process? Yes

Is there a place at the beginning of the over-the-top install where you are asked if you want to include updates? Not sure but I guess I’ll try it again.

If you disconnect from the Internet before you start, does the over-the-top install complete? I haven’t tried this yet but will if recommended.

Definitely try it with internet disconnected!

          cheers, Paul
