As part of my New Year ‘springclean’ I am trying to get rid of unused files in several folders.

I am having trouble deleting PDF files (and ONLY PDF files) at the moment.

The message is: “The action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program”.

I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and it is not running at the time.

Sometimes a delete is successful if I hit ‘Try Again’ several times.
Sometimes a delete is successful if I change the ‘,pdf’ to say ‘.txt’ and then try again.
And then some refuse to go no matter what I do.

It seems this has only occured since upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 and is most frustrating when wanting to delete say a dozen or more files in a folder.

I am aware that I could use SAFE mode, but this is so general there must be somthing that needs resetting to allow these deletions.

    Any ideas?

It does seem if you leave the deletions ‘waiting’ and close File Explorer you can then click ‘Try again’ on each delete and each one will then complete. So File Explorer is the program holding up PDF deletions?

I would uninstall Adobe Acrobat and then either use another pdf reader or the Windows built-in, which should allow you to delete your files.

      Thanks jwoods for that link.
My ‘Launch folder in a separate process’ was not selected but I noted that this solution also required going out of File Explorer, which I found was all that was necessary. I tried removing ‘Preview Pane’ but that did not solve the problem either.

Trev, I can’t see that Adobe Acrobat is the problem, as it is not running when trying to delete the files, it seems to be File Explorer itself.

OK, I removed Adobe Acrobat and opened files in Windows which seems to use ‘Edge’. Preview no longer available in File Explorer, however pdf files will now delete normally! Go figure!

I do like File Preview so will try reinstalling Acrobat DC and report back.

So I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat DC and reinstalled. With the Preview Pane switched off I am now able to delete files, so it was a combined problem of Preview Pane being switched on in File Explorer AND a suspect installation of Acrobat DC that was not releasing the files when Preview Pane was switched off.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.
