I would appreciate help in adding “txt” file to the NEW context menu.

The instructions I found online are fairly straight forward and easy. But did not work.
I want to add TXT file to NEW and have it open   notepad++.

I have attached pictures from the registry of the relevant keys under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt   I suspect there is something wrong with the key definitions. Note that under the key .txt the reference to Gammadyne.  This is the spell checker for notepad++  and notepad++ must have placed this info in the key; I didn’t do this.

    Would appreciate help!! Thank you.

Notepad++ adds an item to “Edit with Notepad++” in Explorer (right click).
“New” in Explorer allows creation of a text file, which you can then open in NPP.
Is this what you are trying to do?

      cheers, Paul

You might try the instructions here: https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-create-new-text-missing/. I have the entry in my context menu but I deleted the data per the instructions and it disappeared. Then I recreated it and it was there again. Hope you have better luck with this one.

Adding to the New section of the Context menu gets quite complicated. If what you what is a right click Context menu option to open a new document with notepad++ there is a much easier way. Rather than trying to add to the New section of the Context Menu, add TXT (or any name you choose) as a separate Context Menu item. This method will add any app to the Context Menu and clicking TXT to open notepad++ will open it to a new document.

The quick way is to edit the Path address to your notepad++ to replace C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe\ in the Registry key value below, which adds TXT to the Context Menu and opens Notepad. Replacing that Path address to your notepad++ will open with notepad++. Be careful and do not add extra spaces or delete any of the quotation marks. After replacing the Path, copy the text and paste in notepad++ and save as a .reg file. Merge the .reg file and reboot for the change to take effect.

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\TXT\command]
      @=”\”C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe\””

If you like I could also give you instructions how to do this manually.

      HTH, Dana:))
