I recently switched computers to one with XP, but can not get the Scanner working.

XP says it has found and installed the drivers for my scanner. However when I attempt to use it, I get a blank output (black). The scanner cycles, and moves the scan head as expected.

Umax says to remove the MS driver, but the Device Manager says it can not find a better driver in the Vistascan directory that was created by Umax download vs3.55u.

If I attempt to run Vistascan, test, or copy I get the message “Scanner Link Failure”.

I have a printer also on a USB port and have tried both cables with it so I feel certain that my USB ports and cables are working.

    Can anybody advise me further?
I had previously tried to get this scanner working with Win2000 with even poorer results. Umax is of no help all they want to do is sell you CD that is non-returnable ( that fills me with much confidence).

Had an almost identical trouble with my Umax 3400 USB scanner. See post 243596 I had to manually install non-digitally signed USB driver by going to the point where it asks you to install from a list (not automatic scan) then pick the USB driver from the bottom of the list. This info is buried in the UMax website I think in the FAQ’s.

I did have the Vistascan 3.55 CD but it didn’t help at all in this case. dizzy

Viking: could you please give me details on how to force XP to select a specific file?
There is a 3.55u file available to download from the Umax site in the UK which I have.

Is the file going to be a driver for the USB port, since the scanner does not show separetly on Device Manager?
I assume changing the USB driver might also affect my printer. Should I reinstall printer after the Umax stuff?

          Hi halek2,
Go into Device Manager ( right click, My Computer, properties, hardware & device manager)
Open Imaging devices, highlight Umax, click update driver, then click bullet-“install from list etc ” advanced.
Choose “don’t search, choose from list”
You should see at least two options there. Umax Scanner & USB Scanner.
Choose USB Scanner. It will say something like, “this is not a digitally signed driver”. Ignore the warning and choose it.
It will install this driver that the Umax uses and you should now be able to have the scanner recognized by the system OK.

You shouldn’t have to do anything with your printer or reinstall it afterwards.
I have this down pat by now since I have to do it if I reinstall XP for any reason & it works just fine. clapping

Bob, Thanks Loads. Finally got there. I needed a file PV8630.sys from the Umax files but it was really buried.

It was particularly strange because the Microsoft driver had started working at some point even before I installed this Umax driver. But now I am back with a fully functioning scanner. Computers are wonderfull when they are working, but they sure can be mystifing.
