It seems that mozilla has killed old add-ons in ver55 of firefox. Anybody else having this problem?

ManagerAugust 29, 2017 at 12:11 am #130984There have been ongoing changes with Firefox, especially recently. You can review version changelogs here.
I have seen various information recently about add-on/extn changes, but only had time to find this, just now for you:

Firefox version 55.0.3
Posted on 2017-08-26 by guenniUpcoming Changes in Compatibility Features

Firefox 57 is now on the Nightly channel (along with a shiny new logo!). And while it isn’t disabling legacy add-ons just yet, it will soon. There should be no expectation of legacy add-on support on this or later versions.I noted in the v.55.0 changelog that version downgrades are no longer likely to be problem-free…

AskWoody PlusAugust 29, 2017 at 4:16 am #131015Using version 55.0.2 and the add-ons are still working although most are now marked “Legacy” which I understand means they will break from Version 57.
AdBlock Plus and NoScript are both marked “Legacy” and I haven’t been able to find out if a new compatible version will be created.
So Mozilla is updating their software in a way that will s**** up their existing users. Now where have I heard something similar over the last few years?

Fortunately according to the Mozilla blog posting NoScript’s Migration to WebExtensions APIs,”The plan is to have a lean and mean version of NoScript available as soon as Firefox 57 is released.” A world without Firefox running NoScript would be very scary indeed!

AskWoody PlusSeptember 7, 2017 at 4:27 pm #132640Honestly, NoScript would be unnecessary if Firefox would restore the Tools>Options menu where you could uncheck the box to allow JavaScript[|ActiveX], much less having to go into about:config.

AskWoody MVPSeptember 7, 2017 at 5:17 pm #132642Firefox doesn’t use ActiveX except where enabled by some add-ons and then it uses IE in an FF tab.
JavaScript is a valid and useful module for web pages, it’s the abuse of JS that’s a problem; NoScript does a lot more than block those two, though the XSS (cross site scripting) part of NS may be all you need if you use uBlockO and good AV/HIPS.

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 8, 2017 at 10:25 am #132725That’s exactly what I do for users I don’t want to be bothered with. Install Noscript with only the cross-site scripting protection on so it stays out of the way, and then complement with ad blockers and EMET.
I run Noscript with all protections and I often have to allow scripts to not break functionality. Having to go in a menu to enable/disable javascript on every web site would be a royal pain. Javascript is not something that is optional on the web for a lot of web sites and its use is often legitimate.

AskWoody MVPAugust 29, 2017 at 8:52 am #131040There are 3x uBlock versions currently for Firefox/clones/forks:
uBlock0.firefox.xpi = older FF/ESR/clone versions and Pale Moon.
uBlock0.webext-hybrid.xpi current FF/clones.
uBlock0.webext.xpi current FF/clones.Which of the current versions you use depends on several factors. Ordinarily the Latest Release versions should be used but the current Release version hits a Mozilla bug, read the release notes per FF version/uBlock build.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 30, 2017 at 9:59 am #131227I am running Firefox 55.0.3 (64-bit), with uBlock Origin/webext-hybrid (legacy), and uMatrix (legacy).
According to Mozilla, the web extension versions of these extensions, as well as for NoScript, are being worked on.
There is not supposed to be a hard cutoff until FF 57 is released in the Fall.

GuestAugust 30, 2017 at 10:35 am #131236After upgrading to Firefox 55 I found uBlock Origin wasn’t working anymore in the Standard user account I normally use in Windows 7 but it was still working in the main Administrator account? Weird.
Anyway, I’ve now finally gotten fed up with the direction Firefox is taking (after using it for more than 10 years) and I have removed Firefox and installed Pale Moon instead. So far I’m quite pleased with it.

ManagerAugust 31, 2017 at 8:22 pm #131555uBlock Origin released as a pure WebExtension for Firefox
By Martin Brinkmann | August 31, 2017
A new WebExtension version of the popular content blocker uBlock Origin was just uploaded to Mozilla’s official add-ons repository for Firefox. The new version is compatible with Firefox’s new WebExtensions standard for extensions, and will as such continue to work when Firefox 57 gets released.
This first official release of the WebExtensions version of uBlock Origin works for the most part just like the legacy add-on version.

GuestSeptember 8, 2017 at 4:40 am #132685ESR Firefox is supported until 2018, and legacy addons should work.(Make it ‘check for updates but ask me’ instead of automatic update}. You can also get portable Firefox ESR from portable apps. If you go to Waterfox and download portable version it is in .paf.exe format, and will load into Portable Apps launcher. Getting pretty frustrated with whole Firefox process, this method buys time, and maybe webextensions will be better by then.

.
Sometime around June 2018, Mozilla will make it mandatory for Firefox 52 ESR to be upgraded to FF 59 ESR. FF 59 ESR does not support Legacy add-ons, ie only supports WebExtensions.
. . . Mozilla may auto-upgrade FF 52 ESR to FF 59 ESR in June 2018.With Linux, users may stop Firefox 52 ESR from upgrading to FF 59 ESR through a Terminal command.
. . . With Windows ??? … -
