WRT a Google operating system:  THE VERY LAST THING WE NEED IS ANOTHER WAY FOR GOOGLE TO MAKE MONEY OFF ME!!  I believe Google to be an evil company (yes evil).  I try to never use any of their services whenever possible.

Remember:  Google makes money (a lot of money) by selling “me”.

You sound like the sort of person who would do better converting older hardware to Linux. We all have choices. The article simply suggests another choice.

RE. ChromeOS Flex:

Note that ChromeOS Flex right now has no access to Google Play or Android Apps. This may change within a short time.

Also, ChromeOS Flex may (eventually) become available for older, “expired” Chromebooks — without having to remove the write-protect screw. I wonder, is Google giving up on continuing to support dedicated Chromebook hardware?

Is this the real-world outcome (so far) of Google’s Fuchsia Project?

Still early days for this free and never-expiring alternative to a Chromebook.

I installed 11 about 4 months ago on a new Dell Inspiron 16 and so far I have zero issues. Maybe I’m one of the lucky ones. That being said, I do follow the recommendations offered on AskWoody religiously and have yet to be steered wrong by any of you. I offer all of you my heartfelt thanks for keeping me on the straight & narrow.

But that’s an annoyance — not a make-or-break issue.

I have found the nigly pigly annoyances bother me more than some of the BIG things. One adapts to th big things but the nigly pigly stuff festers…

Clarification please, and also please forgive if this is a stupid question: you consistently describe the machine with the bulging battery as a ‘PC.’ Do you mean a laptop? I ask because when I see ‘PC’ I tend to think ‘desktop,’ and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a laptop battery that looks like those in the picture; but I’m also unaware of any desktop PCs that come with lithium-ion batteries. Thanks.

I think Fred and I share the same thought. There was once a great distinction between laptops and desktops with respect to capacity and performance. This gap has narrowed dramatically. So I consider a “personal computer” any device (including tablets) that provides the needed computing capability to a person. The only time I draw a distinction is when it is necessary to make a point.

I’m quite sure the battery came out of one of Fred’s laptops.

My Intel NUC-PC is a small form factor desktop PC. It is only twice the size of a deck of playing cards, yet holds an up to date Intel processor and 16GB of RAM, and could hold much more. It uses laptop memory, but can handle just about any SSD out there. And the ports are up to date USB-3 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt-3. As well as at least one other USB-C port.

The distinction between a portable PC and a desktop PC in my case is the battery in the portable PC or laptop. And my laptop is a Chromebook.

So yes, the distinction between a “PC” and a “laptop” is almost entirely blurred these days.

By sheer coincidence, a few weeks after this article I decided to dig out an old Choiix Power Fort backup battery which I last used many years ago to top up my mobile phone on the move. Lo and behold the battery was in exactly the same state having burst open the casing. Much trouble brewing for the future it seems!
