With the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, it’s possible to install macOS Sequoia on Mac computers from as far back as 2008. Here’s how to get everything set up…

The patcher makes use of the OpenCore bootloader which can be used to “inject and patch data in memory instead of on disk.” According to the patcher’s GitHub page, this is why it can achieve near-native levels of performance on officially unsupported hardware…

This guide, however, focuses only on the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, and how to use it to install macOS Sequoia on genuine, unsupported Mac computers. No prior knowledge is necessary, apart from basic familiarity with the macOS operating system…

OpenCore Legacy Patcher allows you to install any version from macOS Big Sur to macOS Sequoia on select unsupported machines. For older versions of macOS, we recommend checking out dosdude1’s Catalina patcher, or NexPostFacto for even older Mac computers that can’t officially run macOS Mavericks…

OpenCore by itself is commonly used in the Hackintosh community, where people install macOS on non-Apple PCs.

      Is this legal?

It wasn’t very clear to me from the Apple Insider article whether a computer running Sequoia through OCLP will get security updates (or any other kind of updates for that matter). Without security updates this would be of limited use, at least for me.

No. But Apple won’t sue you.

..Creating the installation media and going through the process is somewhat complex. The bad news is it’s not something you’ll exactly do once and forget. Whenever there’s a new macOS version (even if you’re going, say, from 14.4 to 14.4.1), you’ll probably need to update OCLP before updating the OS. After that, you’ll need to remove the root patches, install the update, and re-apply the patches after rebooting…

      * Most of these old Macs are not supported for years and get no security updates anyway.
