I am running Win10 Pro, Version 1903.  I am not a “techie”, so I am trying to figure out how Win10 works.  I set up two accounts on my system – an administrator account and a local/offline account (as Woody calls them in his Win10 book).   Neither is a Microsoft account.  I am trying to keep as much as I can on the local account and only use the admin account when absolutely necessary.  So I attempted to install the program using the local account (although I had to enter the administrator password as expected before I could proceed).  However the program installed in the administrator account and works fine.  A shortcut was put on the local account desktop but does not work.  My question:   Is there a way to make it work in the local account?

When you install a program, the installation accesses Program Files, maybe ProgramData, and often the system folders, it writes to the Registry, sets permissions, etc. The Standard User does not have permission to for these activities. That is the reason you need to give permission during the install, the UAC prompt that pops up.

With some programs, at the beginning of the install, there is a checkbox/question “Install this programs for All Users or the Current User.” If you choose the latter, the program is accessible only to the User doing the installation.

When you are doing Administrative tasks (installing programs for All Users, changing System settings, etc) you should use the Administrative account,. That is what it’s for. The Standard User should be for everyday use (accessing the Internet, visiting Facebook, browsing, writing to documents and spreadsheets. etc)
