Trying to free up C drive space

I need to free up some space on C drive. But when I remove applications, there’s no additional free space created. I have emptied the recycle bin, but that doesn’t help. Re-booting doesn’t help. What am I missing, please???

It’s an SSD drive, if that makes a difference. Running Win 7 64-bit.

An alternative to TreeSize is Scanner from Steffen Gerlach. It too is free and will help you see what is eating up your drive space in a very easy to use exploded pie chart.

You can drill down to and open any directory, or you can just mouse over each segment in the pie chart. You can also add it to the context menu to “scan” any folder by right clicking on it.

How are you removing applications?
I’ve uninstalled programs in the past, using the Windows Uninstaller, and then gone into my HD with Windows Explorer and found all the files and folders for that program are still in place. Then I’ve had to manually delete those files and folders. This could be happening to you too.
So, check the “Program Files” folder(s) and see if the programs are still there.

Are you doing your ‘Junk collection’ on your HD? Junk files will take over your HD in time, if you let them.
Using windows own “Disk Cleanup” is a good place to start.
Also, if you disable Hibernate, the HUGE ‘hyberfil.sys’ file in your root directory will disappear. See if that file
exists in your root directory.

Before I do my Ghost backups of my C: drive (weekly) I perform a massive cleanup on my hard drive. I delete over
four gigabytes of junk that I don’t need in my backup Image File.

Try running Disk Cleanup, that will remove files in temp directories (and those can get rather large!) and other files that can be removed without causing problems.

Tweak your pagefile, custom set it for a minimum & maximum. The minimum can be something like 10 to 50 MB.
The minimum will reside on your hard drive at all times and will grow only if it is needed. No need to have a PF of 4 GB
sitting there taking up space…especially if your already hidered by a small SSD.

Turn off hibernation and delete it’s corresponding system file (hiberfil.sys) if you have not already done so.

Remove all restore points and permanently disable system restore. With a proper means to do back up and restore
regimens, this MS offering is not needed.
