Trying to delete a custom toolbar I created – Word 2003

We use Word 2003. I created a custom toolbar as a test to see if it would appear on restarts of Word. It did, and now I want to delete it since it was only a test. But it won’t go away!

I delete it, click Shift-File, click Save All (which I understand saves Normal.dot). I then exit Word. When I restart Word, the custom toolbar is back. I’ve tried it several times. What am I doing wrong?

I’m not sure why it isn’t saving. Alternatively, you could try to save your changes to the Normal template either by opening it directly or by saving from the VB Editor. (For the latter, press Alt+F11, expand something under Normal.dot so that template is active, then save.)

You’re right, I can’t delete a new test toolbar either! At least not thru Tools-Customize — so I tried another route [Tools-Templates and Add-Ins, Organizer button, Toolbars tab] and that worked for some reason. Odd.

I was going through Phil’s troubleshooting routine and I think I deleted my macros. I was on Phil’s SECOND STEP and had started Word with “winword.exe /a”. I then created a test toolbar and saved Normal.dot since the point of troubleshooting was to determine why I couldn’t delete a toolbar once I had created it and resaved Normal.dot. But I think that by doing that save, I lost any macros I had in Normal.dot.

I checked the Recycle Bin to see if the old Normal.dot was there, but it wasn’t. Is there any way to get back the Normal.dot that was overwritten?

By the way, I did a search for Normal.dot on my C: drive and nothing was found. Phil’s #3 under SECOND STEP implies that I should have found it. I have my preferences set to display all hidden files. What did I do wrong there?

Using /a starts Word in its unconfigured “factory” configuration, so it saves Normal.dot in the default location. Unless you had changed the user templates folder to store Normal.dot in a different location, then Word would almost certainly replace the existing template.

Any chance you made a backup?

Our law firm makes regular backups, so I can probably get it from there. Can you tell me why my Search of the C: drive for Normal.dot doesn’t find it?

Just in case your profile folders are partially hidden, you may need to tick the box for searching hidden files and folders. You can also turn off file hiding in Windows Explorer or My Computer (Tools>Folder Options>View tab). Well, assuming this is allowed in your environment.

Thanks–I didn’t know about the option of having hidden files included in the search. It worked.
