• Truncated e-mails in Thunderbird

To save disc space, I have set TBird to not download emails over 150 KBytes.

On large files, I get the message:

“Truncated! This message exceeded the Maximum Message Size set in Account Settings, so we have only downloaded the first few lines from the mail server.

Click here to download the rest of the message.”

Yet when I click on the message, nothing happens!
    Any suggestions?

I found this after reading alot of the same issues….

In Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings, I had “Fetch Headers Only” checked. Once I un-checked that box, everything worked as I would expect it to. With that box checked, I get the “Truncated! . . . ” message every time I try to open an email. Now no longer!

No, I do not have the “Fetch Headers” box checked.

pfeldman, what is your internet connection? Are you connected or offline when you try to get the rest of the mail?
After you click the Get rest of email, give it a minute then hit the Tools->Activity Manager and see if it tells you anything, list any error message here.
then hit Tools->Error Console and let us know if there are any errors related to the time frame you are trying to access the extra info.

pfeldman, what is your internet connection?

I am connected via a 2-way radio transceiver, pointed at a mountain 22 miles away. (Live in the country).

Are you connected or offline when you try to get the rest of the mail?

        Connected.

After you click the Get rest of email, give it a minute then hit the Tools->Activity Manager and see if it tells you anything, list any error message here.
then hit Tools->Error Console and let us know if there are any errors related to the time frame you are trying to access the extra info.

        Activity manager shows nothing.

With error manager, I found this:
        “Error: uncaught exception: [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIExternalProtocolService.loadURI]” nsresult: “0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://tbrowse/content/tburlclk.js :: anonymous :: line 624″ data: no]”

hmm, that error message seems to indicate problems opening links in browsers, it shouldn’t be related to downloading additional mail, however, as a test run, have your Browser open before you open TB.

Another thought came to mind. Is this POP mail or IMAP? Who is your email provider? Do they offer IMAP service?
Do they have a webmail interface, something like
      webmail.nyc.rr.com
If it’s POP, my bet is as soon as you access it once (initial download, but you only receive Header or Truncated message) POP deletes it from their server. So confirm in your Account Settings->Server Settings-> Leave Messages on Server is checked, so that you might be able to recover the ones you need, either by accessing them on Webmail, or by editing your popstate.dat file (looks pretty time consuming, but probably not bad if you only need to get a few)
      http://kb.mozillazine.org/Popstate.dat

Ultimately, if you are doing this to save disk space, why not set up a Gmail account with IMAP access, but better yet, GMail keeps all the emails in their servers so you can access them from anywhere, and only download the Attachments (pictures, docs) that you really need to have on your machine.

This does appear to be a bug, i believe here.
